Default Speed Stepping?

Every time i change my multiplier in my BIOS, as an example, to 8...when i enter Vista, it tells me it is at 6....is this the speed stepping screwing me?
my settings are as follows...

multi 8
FSB 400
DRAM v = 2.1
Proc Volt set at 1.4
RAM Freq at 1600

how can i get the mulitplier to stay at 8?

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 3.2 G0
ASUS P5K3 Deluxe
OCZ Reaper X 2x 1GB DDR3 - 1333
GeForce 8800GT OC 512MB
Western Digital 200 GB 7200
Raptor 120GB HD - 10000RPM
Antec TruePower Quattro 1000W
Windows Vista Ultimate 64
Antec Nine Hundred Mid-Tower

I would say yes, there are typically a couple different names for the setting you need to change.

In the ASUS BIOS > Adavanced BIOS Screen > Disable C1E Support and CPU TM Function

INTEL QX9650
ASUS Maximus Extreme
4GB DDR3-1600
Sapphire HD 3870X2
Danger Den Torture Rack (Custom W/C)
Seagate 750GB HDD
BFG ES 800W PSU

use a program that continuously uses 100% of your CPU and you will see it stay at 8

Thanks HL and Corsair!

cool -thx! i stepped the ram voltage down to 2.05
the less voltage the better i'm assuming
im gonna try to play COD4 and Company of Heroes to give it a go - a prgram i have called Everest say its running 8x400 at 3.2 so i'm hoping it will be stable

CPU TM function doesn't seem to do anything on my E8400. C1E Support though is the culprit of changing the multi.

Also, have you noticed Vista doesn't quite report the good CPU speed sometimes? At first I wondered, but now I see that Vista doesn't take into consideration the FSB you have applied but the stock FSB. However it checks the multiplier. For instance, I got my multiplier at 8x and the FSB at 500 to bring my E8400 at 4Ghz and my memory at 1000mhz. Vista will report 2.66Ghz in System properties, 8 x 333. Just food for thoughts. CPU-Z will however tell you the good speed. :)

If there is a final hour, let's hope for a higher power. One by one, and two by two, I have ammo, what about you?

cool thx - i did start to notice that - i am starting to rely on the other program now - i wil also check out CPU-Z
puter just crashed after 15 minutes - gonna kick that RAM voltage back to 2.1
if it does it again, maybe i should up the cpu voltage?

The CPU Thermal Management (CPU TM) basically throttles down the CPU if you push it too hard. I typically just disable it because of testing.....you might want to leave it enabled to protect yourself until you feel comfortable with your OC.

when I have my E6600 @ 2.8GHz.... XP reported it as 3.15GHz... thats with C1E disabled... CPUz and everything else reported the speed properly, just not windows itself

Ah, must be why it didn't seem to affect my OC one bit. No overheat, no throttling. Thanks for clearing that up.
