Default Overclocking & strange mouse behavior

Started overclocking a Core 2 Extreme on an eVGA 680i reference MoBo, using ECT's Mach II GT phase change cooler. Can easily just turn up the multiplier to 16x for a core clock of 4.3 GHz, and everything works well, even with stress tests like Prime95...BUT my mouse's behavior goes haywire - randomly jumping all over the screen, opening up context menus and the programs whose shortcuts are on my desktop.

Am using Logitech's MX3100 wireless mouse & keyboard, attached via PS2. By the way, the keyboard works fine. Other components: Enermax 1kW Galaxy; Corsair 2GB 6400C4; BFG 8800GTXs in SLI; 2xRaptor 150s in RAID0.

One thought: is the PS2 connection on the PCI bus, and does PCI need to be slowed down? I doubt an FSB issue, since these new nVidia reference 680i MoBos allow independent OCing, without having to crank up everything. My FSB is still stock 1067 speed.

Effectively, your FSB is at 1075 for that overclock.

First off, welcome to the forums!

Secondly, I have that same mobo and an E6600 CPU.

Are you running Bios P24? Do you have a USB mouse you could try? The large majority of 680i mainboards that had issues with PS/2 devices were cured with the P23 Bios, but some were persisting to have issues with anything but USB.

The USB and PS/2 device work off the MCP chip. So if you have issues after using a USB mouse/Keyboard, you could try upping the voltage for the MCP, but I would be very careful doing so. Make sure you have very good ventilation and only adjust a little bit. If it doesn't solve your problem by you increasing it by .05-.1v, then it probably won't solve your problem period.

Here's the offiicial nVidia Overclockers hand-book for the 680i.

Kickazz overclock too!

Wow, killer system!

Have you tried any other mice? How about connecting the mouse via USB instead of PS/2?

I think this is more related to logitech than the overclocked system.. I have 2 logitech mice that I use on my main PC and both act like that at random, at work there is one logitech mouse and it is the only one that does that.. something about those mice that randomly do that...

Thanks HL and Corsair!

Also, make sure the mousing surface you are using is not messing up the mouse's sensor.

Thank you for your quick and informative help! I bought one of those converters that allow PS2 connections to plug into a USB port, and that indeed resolved the problem. But the new issue is that Logitech's SetPoint software won't allow using the special function keys on the MX3100 keyboard when it's connected by USB. I already downloaded the latest version of SetPoint, but that didn't help. Does anyone know how to work around this issue?

Try uninstalling and reinstalling the SetPoint software?

And next time you need something little like that (or anything for that matter), post a thread in the Buy/Sell/Trade section or the HardwareLogic Boneyard and maybe one of us can help you out. I know I've got USB-PS/2 converters laying all over the place being unused!

LOL!
i have a box of 10 or so of those...
As for setpoint, is that the most recent version? if it is and it's giving you trouble, try oldversion.com and look for the second most recent version of setpoint... if it's not there you could always try a bittorrent site...
*EDIT* Also i forgot, you should put your system specs in your sig, it helps everyone trying to help you figure out whats in your box a bit faster = ]
