Default Overclocking Question

Is it true that old dell model computers have a some sort of lock in their processors which disallows you to overclock it?

1.6 ghz
1 X 512mb RAM (Dell Manufactured)
128 MB Novatech ATI Radeon 9550
2 X 160 GB Western Digital Hard Drive

Usually the bios is locked. They don't want you to do anything to void the warranty. The video card is the only thing you can overclock on the old Dell's.

The newer Dells do have OCing options. The older ones however do not. Plus the likeliness of getting any useful speed boost out of an older Dell is pretty unlikely

Dang. Ok, thanks!

Man, having an old dell really sucks.

If you find out what brand and model motherboard you have, you may be able to flash the bios and then get a whole new set of 'non-Dell' options for OCing.

Disclaimer: Do so at your own risk. Understand this could invalidate any remaining warranty on your Dell system. Also, if you run into problems while flashing the bios you may ruin your motherboard.

Only problem with flashing the bios on the older Dell systems is if the bios flash is a non Dell bios flash you run a very high risk of killing the computer. There was a lot of talk when I was there from 2002 - 2004 about how to overclock the computers and only one time did I hear of a successful non Dell bios flash during those years so do some research on Dell's forum if the computer is anywhere near that time frame.

I remember stuff like that on Dell.

The deal was that someone reflashed to a Intel BIOS, thus able to unlock BIOS O/Cing. It killed his warranty though.

Don't remember anything else.

- DFI Infinity 975X
- 4GB Corsair XMS2 w/ DHX DDR2-800
- 250GB Seagate 7200.10RPM + 160GB Hitachi 5400.4RPM
- ATi Radeon X1900XT 256MB
- Cooler Master Centurion 5 + OCZ StealthXStream 600W
- Acer 19" P191W Monitor
- Logitech Z-5500 Digital + Logitech MX Revolution
- Vista Ultimate x64

Dell Inspiron 5150
- Pentium 4 @ 3.06GHz w/ HT Tech
- 512MB PC2700 RAM
- 80GB WD Scorpio 5400RPM HD
- nVidia GeForce FX Go5200 32MB
- XP Pro SP3

Yea it was on only one board and that was the only time I ever heard of it working. No one else wanted to try it at the time because the system cost $2,000.

Yeah, it was one of the XPSes wasn't it? Whatever it is, it's a bitch and not worth it.
