Default I want to OC my 3000+

I've been trying to find a way to overclock my stock clocked AMD Athlon 64 3000+. However, when I went into the BIOS there doesn't seem to be any options for overclocking. I can adjust memory timings and something called CPU>LDT (not sure what LDT is). There is no option to increase the FSB (this is what I really want to do). Anyone know a way that I can overclock this?

Specs
AMD Athlon 64 3000+
MSI K8NGM2-L motherboard
1GB of RAM
250GB Samsung Hard drive
Antec Smartpower 2.0 350 watt PSU

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 at 2.4GHz
Gigabyte P35-DS3R
4GB DDR2 667 (Corsair XMS2 x2 and Edge Technologies x2)
Saphhire X1950GT stock clocked
OCZ 700w GamerXstream power supply
Antec Three 300 case
Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit with SP1

I don't know how to put this, but, I'm kind of a big deal.

Another familiar face, welcome to the forum Hackman. :)

And welcome to the clusterf*** of terms that A64 brought to the table. The CPU>LDT is the fsb, also referred to as HTT, depending on the motherboard. Depending on your RAM and what divider options (if any) that board is equipped with, you may or may not see much success with your overclocking. Boards with integrated video generally tend to skimp when it comes to OCing options, so it will be interesting to see what you're able to do with that K8NGM2-L.

Don't know if you've ever OC'd an A64 platform before, but here's some basics:

CPU Multiplier x FSB (LDT/HTT) = clockspeed
HT Multiplier x FSB (LDT/HTT) = HT Link Bus

As you overclock your processor by increasing the FSB, you're also overclocking the HT Link Bus, which doesn't do well when running to far out of spec. So, it quickly becomes necessary to lower the HT multiplier (not to be confused with the CPU multiplier). On your 3000+, here's what you're looking at for stock speeds:

9 x 200 = 1800MHz (1.8GHz)
5 x 200 = 1000MHz (2.0GHz effective, as it's bi-directional)

If you can find an option in your BIOS to lower the HT Multiplier, I would go ahead and drop it from x5 to x4. This will prevent it from becoming a prohibiting factor in your overclock.

Finally, here's a few OCing guides you might find of interest:

My Athlon64 3000+ doesn't like to be OC'd at all so I just leave it as is...

welcome hackman!!!

Thanks HL and Corsair!

I just want to get my 3000+ to 2Ghz, instead of the stock 1.8Ghz. I don't want to go higher than that.

I'm using 1GB of Corsair Valueselect RAM. Would it just be easier to get another motherboard? If so, do you know of any decent overclocking motherboards that have Integrated Graphics with a PCIe slot?

I've also never overclocked an A64 before. Do you want me to post a link to a pic of what I'm seeing in the overclocking parts?

I have that exact mobo with my 3000+ and mine will not go any more than 100MHz OC and it refuses to boot... it goes past BIOS startup ok just wont go into the OS..
Others may have better luck than me because I am probably just doing something wrong...
what is nice is that this board has "auto OC" features that you just choose a level of OC and it does it without having to go through 10 settings.

General guidelines to CPU OC (increasing the FSB):
-Lower the memory divider
-Lower the HTT to 3x
-Increase core voltage a notch
-Increase chipset voltage a notch
-Stress test, always

It's hard though to start with a board that might not be a good overclocker, because you wouldn't recognize "the symptoms" unlike when you max out a CPU/RAM on a good board. =/

Thanks for the replies. I'll see if I can get another motherboard that may support overclocking. In the meantime (it might take a while) I'll see if I can get another graphics card from somewhere for cheap. Thanks for the help.

Seriously, the cost of a new mobo isn't worth getting just 200Mhz out of it. Your return vs. expenditure simply isn't worth it.

Yeah, for roughly the same price as a new motherboard you can just buy a used (or probably even new) processor that is faster.
