| My CPU idles at 1.14V and 3 degrees Celsius above room temp. At load about 14 degrees higher (37 C) and 1.35V. Is it possible to get a 5.9 mark in Vista with it or should I replace it with something faster. I have also trouble with hard drives seems like Vista is resetting them approx every 15secs. Anyone with the same problems? | We take both criticism and positive comments very positively | The best O/C with any given processor is luck of the draw, nothing more. There are several factors which will play into the O/C.....the stepping (revision), where the chip came from on the processor, and even the supporting hardware all play into the equation. Check out our O/C guide, which is still really a rough draft, but its good enopugh as is to give you an idea of how to OC. | Thanks! I read the o/c guide today. You've probably noticed that I'm already overclocking from 2.66 to 3.2 so I'll try to crank it up even more and see when stability will be a problem. I will also try the multiplier resetting. I have one tip regarding PSU's and power consumption use a mains power consumption meter they are cheap and will show what margin You have. I have at least a 100W margin with my setup. Having a hefty supply is not always good if it's inefficient. Besides, power supplies all have efficiency, and using a "bigger power supply" and loading it less is always better than using a smaller power supply and loading it more. It will be more efficient, therefore use less power from the wall outlet, create less heat and once again, likely deliver cleaner power. I didn't touch on the amps area either. While some power supplies are rated at 400W, most of the power is delivered on the 3.3v and 5v lines. Those are "cheap" power supplies because while you do need a hefty amount of amps on those lines, you need a much bigger amount on the 12v line(s) when you're talking about an enthusiast PC. Video cards and processors feed on those 12v, and have little to no need for the 3.3v and 5v rails. | |

And Polobunny, anything hooked up to the PCI/AGP/PCIe slots draws its power through the slot from the +5V and 3.3V rails. | Seems like there is a very small margin, never trust what's written on the outside.... I tend to buy too cheap supplies, the four computers I have eat them alive. I have to replace 2-3 supplies each year. Where I live I get my mains supply by wires in the air. If i forget to pull the plugs before a tree felling storm there is a very high probability of PSU failure within a week after the blackout. I've lost 2 Colors-it 520W ATX 2 supplies since october 07 maybe they were crap too. I always have at least one psu spare at home. Well it seems my road to overclockers paradise will start with a new PSU and a mains spike filter. (and two spares) Using 5V and 3.3V to power cpu's wasn't that back in the P3 age. | Seems my spare supply was more up to the task a XION AXP 400P12P but I couldn't find its actual performance on the net. For my overclocking needs this ATX 12V 2.2 compliant supply can output almost 29 A on the 12V rails according to the specs. Still it's total output is only 400W. But there is no difference I'll try a few hundred more Megahertz to see what happens. Next Question! The memory: Do I get any improvement at all (even slight) if I run the dual channel at slightly more than half the fsb I've always used matched pairs at half the fsb ex: 2 x 400 = 800 . Am I wrong there? Is there any good mem performance test program that runs in Vista 64 without twiddling. | We take both criticism and positive comments very positively | I have to agree that you may want to look at a bit better PSU......400W is kinda pushing it with that rig, especially with it OCed INTEL QX9650 // Gigabyte EP45 Extreme // 8GB PC2-8500 // BFG GTX260 MaxCore // DD Torture Rack // Seagate 750GB HDD // OCZ Vendetta // PC Power & Cooling 620W PSU |
