Default Hit the wall...OC'ing..

I know there are a million overclocking question out there, and just as many answers, but seems for me theres always the "holes" to be filled in. I have followed the posts (and this seems like a great fourm), and tried to find the answers, but in the end I still find myself posting a question or 2.

specs
  • EVGA Nforce 680I SLI LGA775 Conroe ATX DDR2 2PCI-E16 2PCI SATA2 RAID Sound GBLAN 1394 Motherboard
  • Corsair XMS2 TWIN2X2048-6400C4 2GB 2X1GB PC6400 DDR2-800 CL 4-4-4-12 240PIN Dual Channel Memory
  • EVGA E-GEFORCE 8800 GTX KO ACS3 PCI-E 626MHZ 768MB 2.0GHZ GDDR3
  • Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 Dual Core Processor LGA775 Conroe 2.40GHZ 1066FSB 4MB Cache
  • 1000watt galaxy PSU
So here I am Overclocking already....

From reading, I UNLINKED my memory, shut off all the required items and have found myself at a wall of a FSB of 1416mhz. Anything over this causes system crashes in Ortho after about 15 minutes. I know for a fact that 1406 FSB works perfectly, tested for a week or so at that speed. I can get the system to boot to windows at a FSB of 1446 but i am unable to do any testing do to instant system hangs. All voltages are stock and have not been changed.

now, I have slowly started to increase the FSB again in values of 10, and now seem to find myself around the 1416 number. Where do I go from here?? I read about increasing volts on CPU?? Should I change the memory to Linked/Syn instead of Unlinked?? I guess theres so many roads to take I'm quit not sure which one..... Was trying to get the CPU around the 3.5gig mark.......

temps under load are : 42 CPU, 62 GPU.(when I'm playing Call Of duty 2), but it seems Ortho is putting the CPu around 61degrees Celsius..

thanks guys... again, sorry for the redundant OC'ing questions... and any thoughts would be appreciated.

frosty

first off, welcome to the forums! i hope you enjoy your time here

what kind of cooling are you using for your processor? also what are you using to monitor the temps? if its anything other than TAT or Core Temp, the shown results may be way off.

if you dont know, the max thermal spec for a Core2Duo is 61c. if your hitting that then you need to either back off on the OC or improve cooling. dont wanna burn out that marvel of cpu architecture by heat

What type of cooling do you have?

Depending on the cooling, you can raise the CPU voltage a bit, then I might loosen the memory latencies to 5-5-5-15-2T and see how far you can push that memory unlinked....then depending on how far you can go, hopefully around DDR2-1000 or so, you might be able to link it at 3:2.

As to where you are now, I think I saw 1534 (I think I saw 3.475Ghz in the screenie).....thats about the upper end i've seen from most E6600's, with a few lucky people being exceptions. You can try dropping the multiplier to x8 or even x7 and seeing how far you can push it via the FSB.

Ohhhh... seems my fingers are acting up today inregards to deleting my posts... I had a big'oll paragraph written out and I erased it.... so now here is the short version (sorry).

Zalman 9700 is installed on the cpu, Antec 900 case with the side fan mounted, plus a rather large box fan sitting on the floor that the wife thinks is to keep the living room cool, (but we know better)..

I use the Ntune or NVmonitor to watch the temps. Thats all I have on the system. I only use it for playing CAll Of duty 2....

the front side bus speed is at 1506 right now, that is the only stable number I get too. Anything after that locks the ORTHO program up at some point or another. I did get the FSB up to 1546 (right around 3.5ghz), the system booted fine.. email worked, but as soon as I used Ortho, she froze..1 minute into it.

Do I leave the front side bus speed at the low end and increase the voltage a tad, test, then if that works increase the FSB number again? Or do I go straight to the memory settings and change them like suggested in the reply?

Basicaly what I thought I was supposed to do is increase the FSB until the system wouldn't boot (which i did). then backed down to find the max number (1546). Do I stay at this number and play with voltages,,,,,, man Im kinda wiggin out here, so many options, so many kids runnin around screaming... think my CPU is gonna pop let alone the computers... LOL.....

Welcome! The way I OCed my E4300 is that I lowered the multiplier to 6x and raised the FSB passed the walled point. Then I gradually raised the multiplier until I was back at the stock 9x.

do you mean by increasing the FSB again?

Bios give me a number to choose between 6-9 for the multiplyer... can u use decimal points?? Like 8.5 as a multiplyer??

Nope. Whole numbers only. Just lower it all the way (to 6x) and crank up the FSB (not recklessly, though). Then slowly start upping the multiplier again. You will most likely need an increase in voltage, but if you do that, keep a close eye on your temps. Download Core Temp. It's a better program for temp monitoring (IMO).

thought so, thanks....

also, is it the COreCPU voltage I increase ever so slightly or is it the Core FSB voltage?

I believe the FSB voltage is the NorthBridge, aand I wouldn't touch it.

What did you increase the voltage to?
