Default Help ****** Overclocking Q6600 for 1st time...

Hi,

I am basically have some decent configuration : Q6600 with GO stepping (Checked with CPU-Z) + GA-P31-DS3R

And I'm using

Gigabyte GA-P31-DS3R
2x2GB PC2 5300 kingston KVR667D2N5/2G
512MB NVidia GeForce 7300 GT

Now, I know that I am an idiot, and I cannot find any software that included in my GA P31 Mobo that could monitoring/tracking my CPU as well as Mobo Temprature.. could you guys please perhaps give me a link or tell me your recommended software for monitoring our Q6600 CPU temp and as well as my P31 Gigabyte Mobo please...

yea I know I'm an idiot...

Now get to the main question... (I'm afraid of asking abit too much though )

could you perhaps provide me a detailed "step by step" on how you actually overclocked your Q6600 as that I'm completely **** on this.. I was wonder how did you guys actually changed your Bus Speed from 266 to 300Mhz or 333Mhz, even how you changed your FSB from 1066 to 1200
and yes.. I'm a complete **** on overclocking... so perhaps every1 could be a little bit easy on me...

Thanks alot in advance guys... :D

Core 2 Quad Q6600 @ 2.4 GHz, 8MB L2 Cache, 1066 MHz FSB
Gigabyte GA-P31-DS3L

A good place to start is our HardwareLogic Overclocking Guide...

In there you will find info about what the different BIOS settings do and links to free programs that will monitor temperatures, speeds, and voltages of the different parts of your system.

Overclocking is very touch and go so there is no set step by step guide for everyone (or even for specific processors). Even two identical systems can achieve different overclocking results due to the variation in manufacturing of the parts and such. Read through the overclocking guide and then post back if you've got any questions about it. Don't worry, you're not an idiot! Overclocking these things requires a good bit of experience and understanding of how the different parts in a computer all work together. You've come to the right place though, there are a lot of seasoned Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Quad overclockers lurking here!

Just take it slow and try to only change one thing at a time (that way you know what went wrong).
Oh yeah....

Welcome to HardwareLogic!

i use Everest Ultimate to monitor temps. before you start OC do a lot of research and get familiar with it. start with HL's OC guide. btw, what type of cooler do you have on your quad?

Still using Stock's cooler fan I guess... is this okay? I mean am I still able to OC my Q6600 using stocks original fan?

I have another question that I want to ask... My Q6600 is not OC yet.. and I am reading on the HL guide right now.. and I now just found out that all my Quad Cores are in its 53-59 degrees C, and I am running a full antivirus scan right now... but I am just wondering is this what its should be? or why are my temprature are so high on all my quad cores...

is it because I'm running a full scan of antivirus in my PC? is that really causing?

cuz.. I am starting to wonder if its already this high... I mean what will my temp like after I do an OC...

Thanks people...

With temps like that I would do a re-mount.
Did you use the stock TIM (thermal interface material) that came on the cooler?
On my core 2 quad extreme qx6700 I get loads of 54c (with stock cooler, and at stock 2.66Ghz), so I think those temps your getting are high.

Hi.. as I figured.. it's was caused by the full scan of my antivirus.. as of right now its on 48-50 degrees C :D:D

HardwareLogic Overclocking Guide...

now that I have read the guide... but I'm still confuse.. here... as I told you guys earlier that I'm really new on all this.. for the first step... where should I go or am I changing my FSB and Bus Speed trhough the BIOS of my MobO?

yes, you would raise the fsb speed in your bios. but before you start, i suggest reading more until you understand every aspect. jumping right into OC can be dangerous for your components.

Ok, thanks alot for the reading material... now I'm more understood well about everything.. even there's some little still fuzzy... if you still have any good reading for me... please give me more links...

1 question that's currently in my mind is that.. as you all probably have read from my signature that I am currently having DDR2-PC5300 in my PC, that made me only able run my Bus Speed at highest @ 333Mhz, am I right at this point?

where 333MHz Bus Speed would make my Core Speed able to run approximately at 3Ghz at max (probably after I raised my vcore and vdimm of course, I don't know though), am I still right at this point?

now.. lets say that I get everything right and have my PC runs at 3Ghz after OC-ing. And I am happy with it... now let say a year from today.. I'd like to change/upgrade my memory from what I currently have (PC2- 5300) to say I want to upgrade to PC2-9600 or even to PC3 - 12800 or equal to DDR3-1600, would this be fine for me?

Meaning that I do not need to change anything/setting in the BIOS since I am running a better memory that could even step up my bus speed from 333MHz to 800MHz with DDR3-1600 ? So, I just need to plug out the old 2pcs of PC5300 which I currently have and plug in the new DDR3? that will make all my PC works as viola... no setting need to be changed?

where 333MHz Bus Speed would make my Core Speed able to run approximately at 3Ghz at max by multiplier of 9x (probably after I raised my vcore and I suppose I don't need to increase my vdimm right? since I'm still using it at/below limit of my PC5300 DDR2-667 can do, please tell me), am I still right at this point?

Now last question... what will happen.. if I want to keep my current RAM (PC-5300) and I upgraded another new 2pcs memory with DDR3-1600? (just to have a max 8GB RAM in my PC)?
And will this still max out my bus speed @ 333Mhz as in I still have my current/old RAM of PC-5300 plugged in at my PC?

and again, alot of thanks are deserved for you guys in helping me so far...

Thank You

if I want to keep my current RAM (PC-5300) and I upgraded another new 2pcs memory with DDR3-1600?
not possible. you would need a ddr3 compatible motherboard. your current board supports only ddr2

no setting need to be changed? and even I could raise again my bus speed above 333MHz to get 3.2Ghz core or even 3.4Ghz core speed?
you will always need to change settings when overclocking.

say I want to upgrade to PC2-9600 or even to PC3 - 12800 or equal to DDR3-1600, would this be fine for me?
you would be able to upgrade to faster ddr2 memory but not ddr3 on your current motherboard.

am I still right at this point?
i am not 100% familiar with your bios options but the 'sync' memory ratio (if you have it) should allow you to OC your cpu to your desired goal with your current memory. your ratio would be 1333:667 which is definitely within reach. the normal 1:1 , 5:4 , 3:2 ratios would require a major OC on your memory to acheive if you wanted to reach a 1333 fsb.
