Default abit IP35-E OC'ing

I was wondering if anyone had some personal overclocking experience with this board? I've read around on other forums a bit, but I'd rather hear it here for my own piece of mind. I'd expect it to be on par with the IP35-Pro since it's essentially a stripped down version of that board minus the RAID support. I'll be pairing it up with the CPU in my sig. The ultimate goal will be 3.0GHz on air, which is very do-able with the little Pentiums from what I've been reading about. This new machine is the culmination of about a year's worth of reading all the reviews I could find on every component, filling countless shopping carts on newegg (if only I bought 1/2 of what I played around with on there, I'd probably have stock options by now) and a lot of waiting. I've *finally* gotten the go-ahead from my finance manager...err...wife to start actually filling those carts and clicking the 'checkout' button. I can't wait to get knee-deep in this thing and have some new toys to mess around with. Thanks for any info you may have guys.

You might want to hit up Tech Geek Deluxe, he's a big Abit fan. I think he's one of the few guys around here with an Abit board actually. You can also start by reading HardwareLogic's Overclocking Guide to help point you in the right direction.

My best piece of advice to you is to start small and go slow. You have to be very patient in the overclocking game to get good results. Just jumping up to 400MHz FSB is usually not the way to go. And try to stick to changing only one setting at a time, that way you know what went wrong if the system becomes unstable (or becomes stable again). It makes for a slow process, but will be the most rewarding and reliable method.

Hey ... I'm actually an ASUS fan. :aetsch:
I currently have 2 newer Asus, 1 new Gigabyte and 1 new Abit board running in the house.

Just the Abit IP35 Pro is far better than the many higher end Asus and Gigabyte boards I have had. [Thus far]

The Abit IP35 Pro overclocks very very nicely with finer adjustments than most boards offer. Its better caps are a plus. Cool running board.
  • You will be hard pressed to get a super stable 2.6GHZ from an E2180.
  • You might be able to get a super stable 3Ghz with an E6550 however.
  • You can get a super stable 3GHZ from a Q6600 [G0 stepping] pretty readily.
  • You may also get 3GHZ from the Xeon 3210 [G0] Quad [Kentsfield]
Clubit has the Xeon Go stepping quad for $233 shipped. ClubIT

Thanks for the input guys! My ultimate goal with this is to have a very capable sub-$1000 gaming rig. I'd really like to aim for 3.0GHz with the E2200, but honestly, I'll be happy with it even in stock form since it'll out-perform the crap out of the S939 3500+ I have right now. I know I'm going to be pleased with ANY current generation hardware upgrade at this point.

You might get 3GHZ out of that E2200 ... with a Big Typhoon and IC Diamond 7 Carat Thermal Compound and an Abit IP35 Mobo ... I suspect you can do it ... but with total stability ...hmm ... it would have to be a good chip.

In the Abit Bios under UGuru Utility

External clock ... you might want to start at 236 with a multiplier of 11 for a modest overclock to 2.6 ghz ... assuming you are wanting to take a risk and have a good heatsink and fan ... because you could fry everything ... [disclaimer]

Best to spec ram as close to spec as possible whilst trying an overclock.

  • A CPU Core setting of 1.3 V
  • CPU VTT of 1.23
  • MCH of 1.37
  • ICH of 1.09
  • ICHIO of 1.55
The above are pretty basic settings and leave lots of headroom [With minor benefits] except core voltage and northbridge [MCH] where more OC benefit is found and tighter headroom.

Inch the core voltage and MCH up slowly and see if you can get stable at a 273 external clock [3GHZ]

I would not suggest hardly anything over a 1.4 V core setting [1.45 absolute "scary" max]
Not much over 1.4 on your MCH as well [1.45 absolute max]

If you've got a decent E2200, I don't think 3.0GHz is too far fetched. My E2140 did 2.6GHz easy with no voltage adjustments and the previous owner had it to 3.2GHz. the high 11x multiplier on that E2200 should will get you to 3.0GHz with only about 273MHz FSB and that should be a piece of cake for any intel motherboard. Just get lucky with a decent chip (which is possible because of the higher bin with the E2200) and you're within reach of your goal.

Once again thanks for the info guys. As I said before, I'll be happy just having newer hardware. I think I'll probably go with Tech Geeks recommendations at least to begin with since any hardware OC has it's inherent risks and I'll be pretty much at the mercy of my silicon. Better safe than sorry, and 2.6 stable is pretty much a definite with minimal risk. I think my Zalman 9500 will be plenty to get this thing where I want it. I've seen guys on other boards posting 3.0+ stable on stock intel coolers so I'm not real worried. I'll go with either IC Diamond 7 or Tuniq, probably whichever is cheaper since the temp difference is pretty negligible between the two. Most likely I'll be lapping it as well, so that should help a decent amount.
