They bump versions [almost] every year to account for new hardware and newer versions of DirectX. 3dMark06 is MUCH more intensive than 3dMark03.

I ran 3dMark03 on linux for giggles a while ago ... it crashed after the 3rd game (which ones does 03 use to factor the score?) complaining about not being able to keep focus...but it still gave me a score of about 7800. I tried to run it again but now it crashes my system hard :(
