Default 1800xt overclock hell

I've been running my 1800xt at 654/846 for a few days now with no problems. Full runs with 3dmark06, games etc. Now all of a sudden (about 2 days later), artifacts pop up and it freezes. When I search for artifacts in ati tool, they pop up immediately in large quantity. Now I cannot get anywhere near the 654/846 clock (which really isn't even that high for an 1800). Any ideas what this could mean?

You might have fried the card.
I typically advise against OCing video cards, they are screen pretty well to begin with, and to be perfectly honest the gains are not worth the risks....then these companies overclock them themselves to differentiate their products from other companies....then to top it off, many users overclock their cards on top of that.
You can try to RMA it through the company, that X1800 can't be very old, and should still be covered by warranty

^^^^ What he said. Overclocking a video card only shows results in benchmarks from my experience not in actual play. I hope you can return it for RMA.

I wouldn't say anything about OCing if you try and RMA it.

May God have mercy on my soul for what I've done. What's the best way to RMA it without screwing myself over?

Hmm. I purchased from SC Electronics--some pricegrabber merchant.

Hopefully I can go directly through ATI. Unfortunately, there was a 50 bone rebate on the card so I removed the UPC. Fortunately, I have not yet received the rebate since ATI doesn't believe I got it online, I need to fax them the receipt. So they are in possession of the UPC. Thing's are certainly going to be real hairy now. Any suggestions besides suicide?

Woah, easy there... Before you try and RMA a card that you borked, how about running it at stock speeds and see if there is even anything wrong with it?!

If it runs fine at stock speeds (625/750), then you have no right to return a product that does exactly what it is supposed to do. They don't sell overclocking guarantees with hardware

A few days ago before thing's went to hell, the stock was at 621/747. Now, catalyst apparently does not want to set the card higher then the underclocked 693/594. I determined catalyst didn't want to because after clocking it with ATI tool, I set the values higher to 654/846. When I closed ATI tool, catalyst said my card was back to the underclocked 693/594 (with the requested speed at 621/747) which catalyst "refused" to apply. Upon reopening ATI tool, it set the values back up higher.

Ok. Catalyst overdrive reads my clocks at 594/693. Even though I requested it run at 621/747 (stock). I am now assuming it is blown and unable to reach the stock speed anymore.

(Upon testing with HL2 secret village--whatever that extra level is haha, I now score higher then I did when the card was overclocked SURPRISE SURPRISE.) 3dmark is lower however....

hmm, I would recommend uninstalling ATi tool, the drivers, and then taking the card out, dust it, reset the CMOS pins on the card(if it has them, it should), reseat it, reinstall the drivers, and install ATi Tray tools. See if that helps.

What's the surprise? 3Dmark is just a synthetic benchmark, it has no impact on real-world performance, which is all that matters.
