Default Welcome a New Folder!

Hey guys,

Seems Folding is the latest hip things amongst people and it is for a good cause. I have a X2 3800+ that I barely use the full power off and I thought I could join in. My system is on 24/7 during the summer so why the hell not try it out?

I downloaded Windows 2000/XP/Vista Graphical client v5.03 and installed it. Entered my username and the HL team number and the client started in my tray. So what do I do now? Just sit back and let it run in background or in the window and watch the pretty proteins rotate or erm, fold?

I have a few questions.

What is WU? Also, what is that circular thing on the bottom left corner? Is that the progress of the current thing its working on? It says its working on "p3404dpdp-ii TIP3P ff99 GROMACS core", is that correct? :S And if I press the X on the display, will it stop folding or just close the display?

Its fun to watch it spin around :) What are the gray, blue and red atoms? Uhhh... I took chem 2 years ago >_<

Cheers,
-robodude666

Well, Welcome Robodude666!!!
First a WU is what is referred to as a Work Unit, Hence the WU

Also if you hit the X at the top right, it will just minimize the screen, and you will see the little red whatzit on the bottom in the task bar! Also, by default, Folding At Home will start automatically when Windows starts.

The "pie" shape in the bottom left, is the progress bars

The little "protein" balls are just basically for looks, at least that is all I can figure

Thanks for the welcome :)

WU - Work Unit, hmmm.. that makes sense.. Whats a work unit? Next one doesn't start for 83 days.. hmmm thats a lot of time.

So I take it that the "pie chart" is the progress bar like you said, and its the progress of the current frame? I have 20s till next frame. w00t! Is that good?

How do I win?

So the atoms are just for show? :( Its not actually anything that my computer is generating? >_< Damn waste of memory! Oh well... I noticed if I move my AIM/Trillian window past the Display window, the protein goes crazy!

Hmm, well, the progress pie seems to look like a clock thats stuck at 12 + some minutes. Whoa! 1d until WU ends. Why did 82 days pass in a matter of a few minutes? :S

Cheers,
-robodude666

Yea, when you first start a new work unit, or reboot your computer, it will give you some crazy number of days that it will take to complete, and then it figures out "Oh shit, it isn't going to take that long" LOL

To elaborate a bit on the 'pie shape', there are two. One is for the overall progress for the WU, and the other is for the current frame that the program is working on. Each WU is made up of a certain amount of frames. Each frame is individually worked on and when finished, the program moves onto the next one.

The colored balls you see are the proteins' composition, with each color ball representing the element that the protein contains, such as carbon, hydrogen, etc. etc. So, really, you aren't seeing a willy nilly pattern of colored balls, its really the actual composition of a living, breathing protein. =)

I see :) I sort of figured it out, but nice to have a conformation on it.

Tell that to stinger :P I took chemistry and I know that its the protein structure (forgot what the fancy term is). I just forgot what color is carbon, oxygen, hydrogen and nitrogen.

Well, it seems me playing a game ( ) slowed it down from 1day 16hr to 2d 12hr :( woops!

EDIT: I noticed my right arm started itching a lot since I started this folding application.. Is this a side effect? :S

You guys may or may not have seen this, but it's kind of cool, and is somewhat relevant to the work that is being done by F@H.

Here's the LINK and the news video of it is HERE.
