What are you asking exactly?

It's generally not a good Idea to use a proxy server, unless you have a specific need for it.

Folding@Home uses port 8080 for its work unit data. When someone like me is behind a firewall which prevents traffic through this port, then Folding@Home is unable to obtain work. I will not be joining the F@H team until the program fixes this problem.

You need to punch a hole in your firewall.

With a hole in the firewall, it it really useful?

Punch a hole in your mosquito netting while in the Congo, then see if you get Malaria! I don't want Malaria on my PC's. I guess that's why they call it Folding@HOME... not meant for business users.

we all use firewalls and it's OK.
you have to understand the basic concept of the firewall. you only open the port 8080 for F@H. basicly you grant access to F@H and only that, so anything else tries to get through will not be permitted by the firewall. anyway, only the first 1056 TCP ports are vital, because:

Quote:
Why the first 1056 Ports?
Internet ports are numbered from 1 through 65535, but the first 1023 ports are special. By tradition, and some enforcement, ports 1 through 1023 are generally reserved for the acceptance of incoming connections by services running on the receiving system. Internet services "listen" on various standard low-numbered ports so that clients wishing to have access to those services know where they may be found. Web servers traditionally listen on port 80, eMail servers listen on ports 25 and 110, FTP servers listen on port 21 and Telnet servers listen on port 23. And the list goes on. Here's the official Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) port assignment list. Although it is possible to have higher-numbered ports listening for incoming connections, our scan of the entire "service port range" will detect all standard services running and listening on the standard service ports.
Due to the insecure behavior of Microsoft's Windows operating systems, we have added an additional 33 ports to these first 1023 ports, bringing the total to 1056. Windows has a tendency to establish globally available listening services on the first few ports in the "client port" range which begins just past 1023. If you are not running a personal firewall, or you are allowing ShieldsUP! probes into your network, you may discover one or more additional open ports at, or just above, 1024.

and no, Folding@Home does not mean no business folders but rather, that your machine isn't at Stanford university, where the whole folding concept started...

Port 8080 is most purposefully blocked, along with most others. Our domain requires it, as does SOX compliance. You say just open the port, but your obviously not part of a large corporation that requires 3 tiers of approval for such an action. (it isn't worth the paperwork to get a few dozen machines folding)

In that case no you should not be folding at work. I don't fold on my work computers for the same reason. If you want to fold on your Home computer fine, but unless you own the bussiness I wouldn't suggest folding at work. I also highly suggest not using a proxy at work either. I am pretty sure using one will violate your computer security rules.

At first I thought you were talking about a small home bussiness or something.

hm, I didn't know that. are you folding on your home computer though?
