Exclamation The official SMP thread

here you can post anything considering the SMP client.

sorry guys, I just figured out how to run the SMP client as a service. It's funny I haven't noticed it before but it's on stanford's site in the FAQ's :

Folding@home - FAQ-SMP

Quote:
Note: We do not officially support running the SMP client as a service, although people have found the following to work
  • .NET 2.0 & Windows SMP Client must be installed from the same account with full administrator privileges.
  • using the -configonly flag, say "yes" to services question & configure everything else as you normally would. Do not start the client yet.
  • Open the services control pannel, go to the new FAH WinSMP service & open the properties and click the Log On tab. Select Log On As: This Account (instead of Local System Account), put the user name for the account under which .NET 2.0 and the SMP client were installed. Enter the password.
  • Reboot. The SMP client will automatically start in service mode.
so now I will put up with having to have a password to my account for the sake of gaining on my PPD I'm really eager to see how much difference will it make compared to me running 2 regular clients before ... I will report back on this.

Exclamation The official SMP thread

here is my first experience with SMP:

I installed the SMP client 3 days ago and the work unit's progress got anihilated down to zero 3 times during this time. every second or third restart of my computer (I was installing some hardware), the progress of the work unit disappeared (once from 76%, than 37% and 46%) and started over from 0%
finally I had an idea of making a copy of the F@H folder on another drive and tried it out (this time my progress was at 78%). naturally after a restart, the progress was gone and started at 0% . this time I stopped the client (it is running as a service now) and copied the backup files over the ones in the program files. than I made another restart and voila! my 78% progress was back and running
just thought you could use this trick if you run into something similar

I guess I am just lucky that I have not had any problems with the SMP client (other than it refusing to start as a service).

did you try what I quoted in the other thread? I have XP - maybe it doesn't work in vista?

reporting back after finishing finally my first SMP WU: HOLLY CRAP! this just gave me 1760 points instead of 300-400 points that I was getting with the regular client. if the rest of our team switched to SMP we could quadruple or more our output. now remember one thing with the SPM client: there is a small price for much higher points reward: shorter deadlines (compared to the regular client). for this WU I had 3 days (completed it in 1,5 day's being on 24/7). on the other hand I only have a D830 for a CPU , so anything faster should be fine even without running the client 24/7

I only use XP... and nothing works in my case... oh well its no biggie
I tend to suggest the E2140 at minimum for the SMP client as using anything older may be cutting it a bit close to the deadline... but as long as it is working and finishing units then use it.

Thanks HL and Corsair!

Looking at the PPD (Points per day) average, my E2140 gets 826ppd and my E6600 gets 1300ppd on the p2653 SMP unit.

now that I added my new laptop (also with SMP) my PPD jumped up to over 1000p
I should of switched to SMP long before but I used to have XP SP1 on my old rig and the NEtframework couldnt install on it. without that the SMP client doesnt work. now I have XP SP2 on the rig and vista home on the lappie both running the SMP client

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I just had a WU of 2500+ points. did anyone had a biggie like this before I used to make this much in 2 weeks or so, now it took 2.5 days with the SMP client

it can't send the results over a day now and I'm afraid I will run out of the deadline and loose the WU points
is there anyway to force the WU to be sent? and why is this happening??

sometimes you can restart the computer and it connects after that, otherwise it is the servers at stanford that are having problems... I have been seeing the same messages on and off for the past few days.
