| I keep getting the sound when you connect a usb device. It causes a pause in the system (mouse freezes in place for 2 secs or so). It occurs anywhere from every 20 seconds to once every 15 minutes. It started this past week and I'm not sure what it could be. I haven't installed any new software or hardware. I checked to make sure everything is clear in device manager. I checked to make sure all cards are in the slots and not loose. I ran updated AVG anti-virus last night and spybot s&d, but everything is clear. Any suggestions would be great. | Do you have any USB devices connected? I'm wondering if it's constantly losing its signal and reconnecting. Of course then it would show in your systray too. It might also be a product of USB power management. Go into the device manager and for every "USB Root Hub" go into it's properties and the Power Management tab, then disable the option to allow it to turn off the device. I doubt this will make a difference but it's worth a try. ![]() Join us on the unofficial HL IRC Channel! Is it possible that if you unplug a device without releasing it from the system tray that the computer will continue to try to access it? If it's possible (you will need a PS/2 keyboard/mouse) you might try uninstalling all USB devices/controllers, then rebooting and reinstalling controllers and devices. ![]() Join us on the unofficial HL IRC Channel! | A Lonely Geek | I had the same problem. Started about the same time I had some popup problems. I corrected the popup problems with Hijack this and some fixes, but the mouse problem didn't go away. I was kind of stuck between it being the mouse, or still had some malware probs. I knew I was going to soon do a clean install, so I decided to tough it out until I did that before buying another mouse. I could unplug the mouse, and plug it back in, and the problem would go away for from an hour to a day. For other reasons, I did a Windows repair. It didn't correct the problem. Finally, it got so bad I bought another mouse. That was about the same time I had a system crash, and had to reinstall Windows anyway. Problem is gone. Later, I put the old mouse on another computer...it didn't have the problem. So, I really have no idea what the problem was...malware, driver probs, an XP fart, that my mouse and rig didn't like each other anymore, or what. |
