Default Virtual server/client help

Hi guys in new to AD and DNS etc.

I wanted to give it all a go so I have installed windows server 2003 on a virtual machine and a client on a virtual machine but want to know how to set up the client to be on the servers domain.

At the moment the client cant find the domain.

I am Usint VM Ware

client: Xp pro

Server: Windows Server 2003

Is there anything I should be doing to make sure that the client can be connected to the server.

I can ping the client from the server but cannot ping the server from the client.

I have setup AD and DNS and DHCP on the server

Please remember I am new to this area so please try to explain all issues in basic terms.

Thanks
