Default umpnpmgr.dll

I started my laptop, got a chdsk message and it started to searching and scanning, I couldn't stop the process, when the computer restarted by itself all I got was this

SERVICES.exe Unable to locate component

This Application has failed to start because umpnpmgr.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.

The thing is I cannot do anything about it, even in safe mode.
I tried to find something on the subject , but all I found is what I could do if I had the system up.

What can I do? Is my HD lost?

Thats one of the more common "doom errors", usually when the partition corrupts and Windows won't load because it can't find the universal plug-n-play manager. I've had this before on my old Dell, and it was caused by the hard drive failing and slowly destroying the partition in the process. Before you think it's dead, try using a diagnostics tool from your HDD manufacturer, should find one on their site. If it passes and no errors, try a format and reinstall.

How can I use any tools? I tried a boot disk from a flash drive but it won't recognize it, even in safe mode.

What OS?

There are some HDD-wiping programs that run outside of the OS. Like this one that I have used numerous times and works very well IMO: Active@ Kill Disk Hard Drive Eraser. Low Level Format. Usually your laptop comes with a spare OS disc or reinstall disc. After you wipe the HDD, just reinstall Windows. Only use this option only if you know for sure that the HDD is NOT failing and if you don't care about any files or anything in your current Windows installation.

My take on that problem is pretty simple. You are in a Catch 22. No easy solution. If the drive has data you want you can try the following. Get another HDD and reinstall Windows to it. Remove the questionable drive first!

Once things run place the old drive back in the loop and see if you can find your old data. There is a good possibility, as was mentioned, the drive may be bad, that or it is totally corrupt.

Using a third party app to wipe the drive will blow everything away. That is an option if you don't care what was on the drive. That also assumes the drive to be a good HDD.

Ron

Tools using DOS that don't need Windows to run. Specifically, an application that can be saved to a CD a floppy disk and booted instead of the OS. Who makes your hard drive, if it's a big name company they'll have diagnostic tools on their website you can download with instructions on how to run them. By changing the boot order in the BIOS, you can then load them up from the floppy drive or optical drive without having to go through the bad Windows install.
You want to make sure that the drive itself isn't dying before reformatting. If it looks ok, you can do as Reloadron said to try and salvage your data, or just format and reinstall Windows.

I managed to get the computer up, but it takes like 15 minutes to finally see the desktop. Unfortunately I can't copy and paste anything or even drag and drop. I was gonna dump my c drive onto another HD but I can't even managed to copy anything.

This might be handy if you want to recover your data before wiping the drive:

Gah!! Universal Plug n Play (I think).

Disable it and see if your issue goes away:
GRC*|*UnPlug n' Pray - Disable the Dangerous UPnP Internet Server**

Disable it either way, that page I linked will explain why.

That's what it is, I called HP and the tech told me that's what it is.
What is it? some sort of virus?
I got the little app, I'll see what it does, I have nothing to lose at thi point.
