| I'm assuming these are idle temps. That cooler isn't exactly the best for quad-cores, so that actually looks alright to me. Oh and BTW, congrats on the new build! Since you have finally finished, you mind making a sig as per the forum rules? Thanks. | Modder-ator | As mentioned, are those idle or load temperatures. As a general rule, I try to never let my processors get up into the 50 degree Celsius range. So if you start hitting temperatures in the 50 degree range, you might want to think about re-seating your heatsink or turning the fans up higher. Otherwise, if those are your temperatures while the processor is under a full 100% load, then you are doing great (there is usually a 10 to 15 degree difference between idle and load temperatures). | HL's Technomancer | To echo what Yeller said, the Freezers aren't the best choice for quads. Work better then stock, but if you want serious overclocking headroom and low temps you would need a BAHSF (Big Ass HeatSink Fan). The Thermalright Ultra-120 and Zalman CNPS9700 I hear are good with Kentsfields. Also, just a note, if you just built the system you may need to give your thermal paste time to cure. Probably won't have much effect on temps however. |

| I'm Diggin it! | The Q6600 has a thermal design temperature of 70°C. That means it can sit in a case that's up to 70°C. Of course, you wouldn't want a case that hot, but a 43°C average isn't anything to be concerned about and I wouldn't worry about temps unless you're going over 65°C loaded. I've changed my views on temps recently, so you may find other posts saying I try to keep my CPU's in the upper 50's, which I still do just for GP. I'm just giving you and idea of where you need to be getting concerned. I would definitely look for a better CPU Cooler. The CNPS9700 will fit just fine in the Antec 900 case. Before I started using a water-cooling solution, I had a Thermaltake Big Typhoon on my Q6600 and saw idle temps in the low 30's and loaded temps in the high 40's to low 50's depending on room temperature. That is overclocked to 3.0GHz too. | About the Freezer 7 Pro - why don't you recommend it for Quads? I'm thinking about making a new computer and currently have that marked as my cooler. My concern with the other HSFs mentioned is their weight and the force it puts on the motherboard. Most of the boards are only rated to 450-500g aren't they? The larger HSFs weigh more than that, and are heavily cantilevered which puts even more strain on the motherboards. I should note that I don't plan on overclocking, but am after noise reduction. | Modder-ator | That's not at the breaking point of the processor, but those temperatures are still pretty high. Try reseating the heatsink and reapply the thermal interface material to make sure it's getting good contact. If you're feeling a little more adventerous, you could try lapping the base of your heatsink and/or surface of the processor in an attempt to get better contact. You could also clean out your case fans and fan filters to make sure airflow is at its best. |
