Sound wont work....

Right now i am at my friends house trying to fix a problem. Her computer's sound seems to not work and i tested the speakers, but the speakers work perfectly fine. I think she did not install this sound driver. Whats seems to be the problem??
Update: I checked the add and remove and found a program that said "SoundMax NT"

I am not sure though do i download program cpu to tell the specs of the computer?> Her computer is a pentium 4 1.60ghz 246mb of ram.

1. Does she have on board audio or a sound card?
2. Did it work before or is this a new build or....?

If she doesn't have a sound card, then it's on board audio. If it worked before and now it's not...then something got changed.

Try going to control panel: sounds, speech and audio devices, then sounds and audio devices, then audio, then sound playback. Make sure it hasn't been switched. If there's more than one sound playback device option...try switching to a different one.

See if that helps.

I can't seem to get any sound on flash videos whenever I play them .

Did you use to or you never have?

Also...when I built my first computer recently there was some things I couldn't play because I didn't have the right codecs. Google audio and video codecs for windows media player and download those. That might help....it couldn't hurt even if it doesn't. Also...google codecs for the flash player and make sure you have an up to date one.

I don't know if these will help....it's been a while since I've had any trouble with sound or video.
