| 5 Minute Mod Man | Well I mentioned in another post that I was an OC **** but after what happened today, I may just have to fully upgrade myself to PC **** status From the title of the post I am sure you can tell it didn't turn out well... but believe me, it's a miracle that it wasn't much worse. I got my new HSF today, so I was finally ready to upgrade the bios so I could finally dabble in some OCing... What was my first step? well I had to add a flloppy... Simple task, right? Not for this ****. Yes, I have done it MANY times in the past. Most of the PCs I have built included them, but the only time this PC has had one is when I got my SATA drive and I had to install windows on it. WELL, I grab an old floppy, connect it to the PC, boot it up and get into my bios. I just had to enable the floppy and away I go. Well my IDE and SATA HDDs were showing up in the bios but not my DVDRW. I noticed it fairly quick and thought, I might have just accidentlally pulled on the IDE cable when I connected the floppy. So I shut it down to check it out. I immediately took a look (the side panel was removed) and there it was... SMOKE RISING OUT OF THE CASE HOLY $#!t !! (as the power cord was pulled out) The red wire was bubbly and/or burnt and/or melted on that circuit (I say 'circuit' but don't know if that's the correct term) I am assuming there was some short in floppy, so it went in the trash. Fortunately the only thing connected olong that circuit was the DVDRW. I still have to check tomorrow to make sure that is not fried. Even if it is, I will count my blessings... The HDDS and video card were on another circuit coming out of the PSU. Like I said before I don't know that 'circuit' is the proper term here because I don't know the inner workings of the PSU. But I know the wires come out in seperate lines (groups). It has two sets of (1XSATA Power, 3X-4 prong connectors, 1X-4prong floppy connector) then it has the 24 pin ATX connector, then the 4 pin connector then another line with a 6 pin and 8 pin connector on it. Anyway, the PSU still works except the one 'circuit' that went to the DVDRW and Floppy (and some fans). For whatever reason the rest of the wires werent affected (yes I was daring enough to test it, knowing I would even risk more problems) BUT rest assured the PC will not be plugged back in until I get a new (and better) PSU! SO I sure lucked out that I didn't fry everything! ![]() |

| Oh god, I've done that before, Put the floppy connector on wrong. The floppy should actually still work, you put put the connector one pin so a positive and a negative line were connected through the two ground pins, but that means your PSU Over current protection is not functioning. Then looking at your sig, you have a Chiefmax PSU, which is identical to Powmax or any other yougyear PSUs, before you do any OCing, I would replace that PSU... | 5 Minute Mod Man | Yeah, chiefmax is a generic brand... [currently trying to find a GOOD PSU] I didn't think so, but anything is possible (and actually that is probably more likely than having a fried floppy) But saying the froppy is shorted makes me feel better ;) Last edited by gvblake22; January 22nd, 2007 at 16:43. | Modder-ator | ^^ Maybe you meant to "Corsair"? I'd also like to add Seasonic to your list of quality PSU manufacturers worth considering. Fortron is also often referred to as FSP (for Fortron Source), just a heads up when you are browsing around ![]() And you probably don't need a new thread as it's a little late for troubleshooting his problem. A solid 400-500 watt unit should do you fine, you don't need some 700W beast to run a typical system like yours. |
