try these steps
-restart your system and boot into windows safe mode with networking
-open internet explorer (even if you don't use it)
-tools>options - delete cookies, delete temorary internet files. sometimes deleting the temp internet files takes a while.. wait for your cursor to return to an arrow.
-once that is complete, go to the advanced tab and uncheck "disable third party browser extensions". while you are in there you might want to uncheck "reuse windows for launching shortcuts". i always do this because it always happens when i am typing something long.
-next, push start>run and type in msconfig, once open go to startup tab
-go to Sysinfo.org and type in each entry thats in your msconfig startup list. uncheck anything that you discover is bad, don't need, or don't want. ie: qttask, itunes, etc. this wont delete the programs, just stop them from starting automatically.
-restart your computer and boot into windows normally, check don't show this messege again on the msconfig pop-up
-test your internet.

this process should help with internet issues as well as speed up your computer because of freeing up memory by disabling programs from starting up. if you still have slow internet, grab yourself a spyware program and run that. most people will actually run the spyware program first. but i just have a habit of doing it this way.

i recommend using spybot search and destroy AND adaware. one will find stuff that the other wont and visa versa. be sure to update both programs definitions before you do your scans.

there may be newer better stuff out there now but i still use those two for my xp machines.

goodluck.

Also...I would also go to Black Viper's Web Site show you which process's to disable or set to manual. I do it everytime I get a new system or do a recovery install on my system. It definitely won't hurt as long as you follow the instructions.
