hmmmm, first, pull the side panel off it and use some compressed air to blow out all the dust and stuff thats built up (Also make sure you don't have any critters living in there),

when you boot, does it give you the options to start normally, from safe mode, or last good configuration?

Can you get into the BIOS? As soon as the POST screen (the first screen when you turn your computer on) push the "Delete" key. You might try setting the BIOS to default and rebooting (either optimal default or fail safe default).

You might also need to replace the system battery, its the small round silver thing on the motherboard, you can get a replacement for it at Wal-Mart or like store.

It sounds more like a software issue than a hardware issue to me. You may have to just format, but lets hope not. What all are you able to do in windows before it freezes? And where exactly does it freeze?

Shouldn't be a software issue, I could see if it were being used....but sitting unused for six months.

Formatting the HDD should be the last resort and not our first recommendation

I thought about it as well, but it didn't really make sense that he could get into windows and THEN it would freeze, unless it was overheating. But most OEMs that I've seen work well with mounds of dust and such in them. Guess we'll just have to wait for him to clarify just were he is getting when it boots. (Chances are if it hardware related, its going to be a part that has completely failed and died. Hate to see that happen.)

I'd be concerned one of your fans aren't working. Either CPU or GPU. Like Capper said, pull the side off of your case and clean it out. Once that job has been performed, check all of your connections to the drives, the Ram is seated properly, the video card is seated properly, etc. Sounds like perhaps you moved it a bit, so these things should be at the top of your list to check.

I would go with Capper's suggestions to start out with. If the problem still perists, then a reformat/reinstall of windows might be necessary as it is possible that you have encountered some data corruption on your hard drive, possibly from the slight migration of the magnetic bits on the hard drive platters.

While nuking out any dust bunnies, and while your case is open, check that all components are fully seated and/or reseat them (videocard, memory, etc), as well as power connectors. And DOUBLE check any SATA cables that may have come loose, both on the motherboard and in the hard drive. Having sat for so long, it's probably been moved once or twice, and SATA cables are especially prone to easily popping out of place.

Yes, you especially want to make sure there are no dust bunnies wedged anywhere important......damned dust bunnies get into everything
