Default Problem with a new build... BSODs and errors!

Aite, so I'm having problems with my bro's new build. I installed Vista the first time, but it resulted in a Page Fault BSOD, normally indicating a problem with the memory, HD, etc. I ignored it and installed Vista again. Worked. Installed the drivers. Rebooted, got a BSOD (the one you usually get - one that indicates a problem with recently installed hardware). So, I tried Vista again. Now the installer was having a problem. I tried the other Vista DVD I had, same problems. Installer was making some weird error.

I tried XP Pro SP2, which resulted in the thing still installing, but telling me that it couldn't install DiskDrive and CD-ROM. Dunno, it's still installing right now.

I've come to conclude it's either the memory, HD, SATA DVD burner, or the disks (which doesn't seem likely).

Is it possible that because the HD is IDE and the DVD drive is SATA that it's causing problems?

Any ideas?

I would try and find another optical drive to try. Also, check and make sure the HDD jumper is set to master.

Ahh, I believe it's on Cable Select right now. Would that really make a difference?

And the problem with swapping out with an IDE DVD drive is that there's only one IDE port on the system.

How did you end up with a PATA HDD in the first place?!
You should still be able to put both on the same channel. It's obviously not ideal, but it should still work.

I thought you couldn't write to a drive on the same channel?

Uh, it's from the modded Xbox... :). 200GB HD.. hehe.

Well, I got some error after restarting... It loaded into Windows after it restarted after some BSOD (too fast too see).

I'm running MemTest86, recommended by Paul... So far, it's 10 minutes in without error. I'll run it for 1 hour to see if there's any problem.

It seemed to be caused after installing the Realtek network drivers... Now it won't connect to the net... I might just use my restore point or rollback the driver.
