| My brother's helping a friend with her laptop (HP Pavilion dv1000). She just got a new one and needs to transfer files over. But the thing won't turn on. You press the power button and it won't boot up. My brother tried it with and without the battery. I haven't actually been able to get it in my hands yet (I'll try this weekend), but I want to see if I can get it fixed without him bringing it home. :) Any ideas? - Core 2 Quad Q6600 - DFI Infinity 975X - 4GB Corsair XMS2 w/ DHX DDR2-800 - 250GB Seagate 7200.10RPM + 160GB Hitachi 5400.4RPM - ATi Radeon X1900XT 256MB - Cooler Master Centurion 5 + OCZ StealthXStream 600W - Acer 19" P191W Monitor - Logitech Z-5500 Digital + Logitech MX Revolution - Vista Ultimate x64 |

| Modder-ator | A similar thing happened to one of my Mom's friend's laptops. After going through the typical troubleshooting steps of checking the power plug and making sure the connections are good, it was just a matter of holding the power button down for several seconds rather than just a quick "click". |

I'm gonna try to snag either the HP or the Dell he currently uses. I hope I get the HP... I'd rather have a Centrino. :) - Core 2 Quad Q6600 - DFI Infinity 975X - 4GB Corsair XMS2 w/ DHX DDR2-800 - 250GB Seagate 7200.10RPM + 160GB Hitachi 5400.4RPM - ATi Radeon X1900XT 256MB - Cooler Master Centurion 5 + OCZ StealthXStream 600W - Acer 19" P191W Monitor - Logitech Z-5500 Digital + Logitech MX Revolution - Vista Ultimate x64 Last edited by wtcnbrwndo4u; October 23rd, 2006 at 16:14. | |

| Didn't work apparently. Seems to be a dead mobo (common problem apparent). I sent my bro a fix on HP site (reseating memory) and we'll see where it goes from there tomorrow. Anyone else have an idea? - Core 2 Quad Q6600 - DFI Infinity 975X - 4GB Corsair XMS2 w/ DHX DDR2-800 - 250GB Seagate 7200.10RPM + 160GB Hitachi 5400.4RPM - ATi Radeon X1900XT 256MB - Cooler Master Centurion 5 + OCZ StealthXStream 600W - Acer 19" P191W Monitor - Logitech Z-5500 Digital + Logitech MX Revolution - Vista Ultimate x64 Last edited by gvblake22; October 25th, 2006 at 19:54. | We take both criticism and positive comments very positively | Nope, seems like you are on the right path though INTEL E8400 // Gigabyte EP45 Extreme // 4GB DDR3-1600 // Palit HD 4870 // Antec 1200 // Seagate 750GB HDD // Zalman CNPS9700 // BFG ES 800W PSU |

| Colonel Calamity | I found that on alot of these type of laptops the power connectors come loose and lose connection with the mobo.. if it was loose for awhile and the battery never charged, then that may be one option to look at... but it may mean either a simple soldering job or a complex mobo replacement. ![]() Thanks HL and Corsair! My opinions are my own and not representative of this site or its members. |

| Silence..Or I kill you! | Unless you have dealt with laptops in the past, you do not want to try to attempt a mobo replacement yourself!! They can be a very tough and complex mobo to replace!! Even for seasoned computer techs it can be a royal pain in the a**. |

| Yes, I know they're incredibly different. But I'd rather do it myself than pay BestBuy. If my bro is willing to get the mobo replaced on this, then we'll install it together. :) Oh, and I found it out it's only a Celeron M. Ehh, they're not half bad. I bet it has only 512MB of RAM and a DVD drive too. And I have no clue if my brother tried that fix (reseat memory). I haven't talked to him in a few days. :) - Core 2 Quad Q6600 - DFI Infinity 975X - 4GB Corsair XMS2 w/ DHX DDR2-800 - 250GB Seagate 7200.10RPM + 160GB Hitachi 5400.4RPM - ATi Radeon X1900XT 256MB - Cooler Master Centurion 5 + OCZ StealthXStream 600W - Acer 19" P191W Monitor - Logitech Z-5500 Digital + Logitech MX Revolution - Vista Ultimate x64 |

| We've opened a compaq lappy, wasn't too bad. We only replaced some fans and the heat sink IIRC. What do you have to lose? FWIW, you may want to label parts as they come off with post it notes, or tape them to a print out of the manual Wave Master: Gigabyte GA-7NNXP, Barton 3200, 1 gig PC3200, BFG 6800, Ultra X-Finity 600W, DVDRW, 750 Zip 80, 160 & 200 gig hard drives Dual Xeon folder: SilverStone SST-TJ05S-X, Gigabyte GA-9ITDW, Intel Xeon 3.2 Irwindale 800MHz x2, Geil 1 GB DDR2 PC2 4300x2, BFG 6600 GT OC, Ultra X-Finity 600W, DVDRW, Akasa AllInOne, WD Caviar RAID Edition 120x2, Win XP MC 05 |
