Default PC Shutdown

Ok. I have no idea what happened. I was on my pc about 6 hours ago when it just shut down and restarted. I wasn't doing anything intensive I was just using the internet. It rebooted and seemed like everything was fine. I continue to use it and just about 15 minutes ago it shuts down again but this time won't boot back up. I had to reset the jumper on the MB to get it to boot up this time. I went back in the BIOS and reset everything and it froze up while booting. Once again reset the jumper and only reset boot order and OC'd the RAM to get it to the specified 1066 speed. Booted up fine. Any ideas? I have been using the PC for over a week with the slight 2.66 OC on the proc and this never happened before. Not quite sure where to start. I think i'm just gonna forget about any overclocking til i'm sure this thing is gonna run fine whithout one first I guess. Any help would be appreciated. thanks.

My first suggestion was to do exactly as you said. I would run everything stock. I would allow the BIOS to run at default settings and just see how things run. Assuming things run just fine at everything stock for a few days then I would worry about other things like overclocking.

Next if the problem continues at stock default settings I would start looking a maybe RAM running a single stick at a time or run MemTest.

That would be starters.

In addition to what Ron said:

Another thing to do:

press Windows key + Pause/Break
Advanced tab
Under Startup and Recovery, click the "Settings" button
Then under System Failure, remove the check for "Automatically Restart"
Click OK at the bottom.

Also I would take a look and see if there is a BIOS update for your board and see if that helps at all. Then make sure you check the memory (OCZ) website and see if your specific memory is on their "Hardware Compatibility List", and then the same with the memory on the Evga motherboard manufacturer website.

But if it crashes from windows again, write down the details such as the file that crashed it and the 0x000 codes.
If the file is nvXXX.sys then it is likely your video card drives or video card itself causing the crashes.

Ok. I checked on EVGA's Website and it does support my
RAM. I have been running my machine at stock CPU speed and the RAM set to 1066 and have had no problem. I have read on the EVGA forums though that alot of people have problems with the P32 BIOS update and trying to OC a Q6600 proc. Most of them state they have had more luck going back to P31. I read somewhere on this forum (but for the life of me can't find it now) that going back to the P30 BIOS might be even better for a Quad core CPU. What do you guys think? Has anyone on here had better luck OC'ing a Q6600 (or any Quad core I guess) with either one of these?

And one more question that may or may not be related, My PC doesn't seem to shut down completely anymore. The only reason I mention it is because It seemed to happen around the same time. It seems to completely shut down windows (I get past the shutting down screen and the screen goes black) but the fans remain on and I eventually have to do a hard shut down using the power button. When I restart it I get no message that windows didn't shut down properly which makes me think windows did in fact shut down. I read that windows needs to resolve something and takes a long time to shut down and once you let it the problem resolves but I have let it do this overnight and the fans are still running in the morning. Any suggestions on this?

I apologize for the extremely long post. (Which I just made even longer. Did you notice? Which raises another question... Am I really sorry? Hmm.)

Many times Vista has to do all this background crap that I have seen it take 30 minutes to shut down on occasion. Other times it takes 2 minutes...
This is another reason why I stick with XP and Linux but thats just my preference.

I had this same exact issue a while back, sometimes it would blue screen for me, but most occasions, it was as you said; without any warning or message. It ended up being a bad DIMM slot that was gradually spreading throughout my mobo.

Hopefully that's not the case with you since your hardware is spankin' new. I'd do as Ron said and run it through memtest for a night.

So I ram Memtest86+ for 4 hours and didn't run into any errors. It said it made 5 passes. I will run it overnight if you think a longer test is necessary. I made an iso disk and let it run outside windows. It started running a test on its own so I let it go figuring the disk was smarter than me. I don't need to change any settings do I? Just let the disk run?

Anyway back to one of my earlier questions, I am thinking of taking the BIOS back to the P31 or P30 version after hearing that some people have had trouble OC'ing quad core proc's with the new P32 version. Any input on this? I updated to P32 pretty much right away hearing that I should update all drivers and the BIOS right away (I pretty much do what I'm told), so I'm not sure how an OC would act with either of these versions(Not that i'm itching to OC anything until I get a better heatsink. TOO HOT.).

Also, you guys rock! I alway get a speedy response and, as far as I know, you guys know what your talking about. Thanks.
