Default New Computer Woes

Just built my own computer from parts. Spent all day putting it together was doing great till I plugged in the ethernet cable. For some reason I'm getting no internet activity and can't connect to the internet at all. Connection manager says packets are being sent out but none are coming in.

Turned off windows firewall.

Updated drivers.

No luck.

Running an intel 775 socket motherboard

Make sure the drivers for your Ethernet card are installed. Right Click on Network Places and then Click Properties. Insure your Ethernet card shows up in the list, it should be labeled something like Local Area Connection 1. If you have firewire they will show up as 1394 connection. This may be confusing, if you don't have a Local Area Connection showing up then your drivers aren't installed.

Right Click my Computer Go to Properties, click the Hardware Tab, then the Device Manager Button. Scroll down the list and look for any Yellow Explanation Point Icons. These identify devices that don't have drivers installed. Look for one that says Ethernet Controller. Right Click and install the driver. The driver should be on the CD that came with the motherboard.

If you're Ethernet Card is installed correctly and your still not getting a connection, check to make sure your cable is not damaged, and that it is plunged in to the port on the Ethernet card and the network device securely. If your still not getting a connection try plugging it into a different port on the network device.

On a side note many motherboards are coming with 2 Ethernet cards on the Motherboard, it's possible for one to be installed correctly and the other one isn't. Since typically they are not from the same manufacture, and require a different set of drivers. If you are seeing a Local Area Connection, with no activity it is possible that you are plugged into the Ethernet Card that is not installed correctly. The fix for this is to plug into the other card, or install the drivers. You should install the drivers anyways.

Also you may need to enable your lan in your bios. I just went through this the other day and it turned out I didnt have my drivers installed. :)

I would rather read a NewEgg review than a [H] review

I had a similar problem once with my cable internet. If you are on cable, this is what I did...
  1. Shut down computer.
  2. Pull power on modem (and router if you have one).
  3. Disconnect the coax cable from the modem.
  4. Let sit for 2 minutes or so.
  5. Reconnect coax cable to modem.
  6. Reconnect power to modem.
  7. Let sit for 1 minute or so.
  8. Turn on computer and boot into Windows.
