Default Network issues!

I thought I had all my woes figured out... apparently not.

Well, my network icon in the taskbar always says disconnected. Yet, I had internet. Well, in order to remedy the problem (since I wasn't able to access any settings related to networking), I deleted both my wireless card and network adapter, hoping to solve it.

Didn't do a thing.

It didn't do this when I first had the card installed, so I'm running a system restore (sadly, 48 updates have to install before that - a little weird, but OK).

Any idea why the hell this would happen?

Vista Ultimate x64 by the way!

The last time this happened to me, the only fix for me was to completely reinstall Vista, otherwise I tried every single other fix out there and nothing worked.
Also this time I am using the driver that came with windows during install instead of from Windows Update or the manufacturer and I have not had a single hiccup since. That is the ONLY difference in my case.

Thanks HL and Corsair!

My drivers were from the install as well... It's weird... I dunno, we'll see if this restore worked.

yeah I have seen it go either way.... either the originally installed drivers work... or only the drivers from the manufacturer work... so may be time to use a thumb drive to transfer manufacturer drivers (if any for x64)...

Hmm, when every I see funky stuff going on with the networking in windows I always do a netsh i i r r and w r, that always seems to refresh stuff. Not sure if it'd fix that problem though... maybe an sfc /scannow might help. Might be worth a try before reinstalling windows (might need to reinstall any antivirus/firewall after doing the netsh commands.)

Might not effect it at all, but might be worth a try before reinstalling.

Had the same problem, along with a host of other things not working. You didn't happen to install AIM or any windows updates lately?

It is some issue with UAC and some apps changing a value vista did not like. In my case, the new AIM 6.5 was causing the issue. I had to Enable UAC, un-install AIM, restart, then install AIM 6.5 again with UAC enabled, and it brought my system back to normal. After which, I disabled UAC again, and it was fine.

Yeah, usb adapters seem to have terrible driver support for vista, unless you get one that's been released since it came out.

Although considering it sounds like you're loosing your ip address whenever you go into wow, I'd try the netsh commands I mentioned earlier, especially the i i r r one, (i can never remember if w r works in vista or not, you might just need w r), since it will reset your ip stack and such nifty things. Helps quite a bit when you have no ip issues (which is normally the reason it only lists your access as local).
