Default My Monitor, PSU Issue????

Hello everyone :)
I had just encountered a problem, after getting all my parts from newegg, I build my comp, however I did not order a new Power supply. So i'm here sitting with a completely build computer, but the monitor is not turning on. So I check the Power supply Ratings

my 7950GT Needs : 12v with 22a
my Powersupply is : 12v with 18a

Is it a power supply issue or it doesn't matter? I don't have 2 psu rails.

Everything is working fine, the fan on the GFX card is working, everything (hopefully im sure) is plugged in correctly. Can anyone help me resolve this issue?

And if it is the powersupply problem, what is the best powersupply but not so expensive in a local store such as Fry's or what not.

Thanks in advance!

What psu are you using now?
Maybe hook us up with a sig so we can see what all you are running.
You might wanna check this section of the forum out. http://forums.hardwarelogic.com/f16/ And I would buy online if you want the best deal. Buy from newegg they have some of the best deals around.

I would rather read a NewEgg review than a [H] review

Sorry if i'm a little anxious, but I don't have much time, as I have to go soon and I won't have time tomorrow to check up on these forums, is it the Power supply problems?

I doubt that it's the power supply, based on the unit and how well it will support that rig you put up -- this is of course unless the unit is bad.

Based on your video card, the PSU might be causing some problems just because it has 18a on the rail - single rail doesn't matter, it's the power it's dishing out. It should be fine in terms of compatibility, and I've seen worse PSUs running a 8800GTS perfectly fine. Don't rule it out, though. Try to get your hand on a more powerful PSU and then test it out that way. Since the motherboard needs a separate port to even have a display, that isn't where the problem lies.

1) Quickly hook up that monitor to any other system to make sure it isn't the monitor.
2) Get a new PSU to test out the rig. If everything works fine, you know what it was.
3) Get another GFX card, or a simple PCI monitor card, and test that out to make sure it isn't the motherboard or the GFX card. If it powers up, your GFX card could be faulty; but that still doesn't rule out that the PSU isn't powerful enough.

The most important one would probably be #2 (if #1 doesn't do anything for you). It still could be the motherboard, or the GFX card. This is the way to almost 100% rule those out, though.

Good luck on the fix, and post as much info as you can here so we can help you out.

And WELCOME TO HL!

Thank you for the information, and for the welcome :]

Also, How would you go about figuring out if it's the Motherboard problem, or the GFX Card problem?

Actually! My mobo has a atx_12v connector, but my last mobo didn't have one. however, my Powersupply doesn't seem to have a atx_12v connector either, could that be the problem??? But there's also a 20pin(?) connector on the board, Do I need both or can i just use the atx_12v? I'm hearing all this stuff, but wanted to make sure and ask the experts.

The ATX 12V connectors sole purpose is to provide local power to the CPU. Generally a 4 or 8 pin connector. Yes, you also need to connect the 20 Pin motherboard connector to the PSU. Newer boards use a 24 pin connector. Regardless the 20 or 24 pin connector needs connected. Additionally, if your graphics card has a 12 Volt connector it also needs connected. If the PSU itself does not have the ATX 12V connector an adapter can be had.

If this:
Pure Power TR2 420W Power Supply-W0061/62

is your PSU you should have everything you need as to connectors.

This is almost certainly a power supply issue, and if not, it's going to rear its ugly head at some point. Just 18A on the +12V rail is woefully inadequate for any modern rig, particularly with a high end videocard. Your PSU should be carrying 30A+ as a minimum, keeping in mind that today's systems feed heavily off of the +12V rail(s).

As a general recommendation, look to (in alphabetical order) Antec, Corsair, Enermax, Fortron Source, OCZ, PC Power & Cooling, Seasonic, and Silverstone (Olympia or Decathlon series). Specific models will depend on your budget, but to give you a few candidates to get you started:

Corsair Modular 520w - $95 shipped (after $10 MIR)
Antec TrioPower 550w - $100 shipped
Antec TrioPower 650w - $100 shipped (after $30 MIR)
OCZ GameXstream 600w - $118 shipped (after $10 MIR)

Ok, one last question. I got my computer working and everything, when I booted it up, on the post screen it gave me a "Disk boot failure, please insert ..."

Now I don't know what to do, I've tried to install WINXP but it Doesn't let me. Is a floppy drive required or no?

Make sure you go into your BOOT settings in the BIOS and set the first boot device to your optical drive.

Now I'm curious...how did you get your machine working? That extra connector is most definitely what was causing the problem...did you manage to get another power supply?
