| Hello folks, just recently my laptop took a big s**t on me. Here's what happened: I have a stereo with aux inputs that I like to plug in to my ipod/laptop to listen to music. I go to plug the 1/8 inch cable into the headphone jack on my laptop, and BAM, my laptop shocks the hell outta me and immediately shuts off. i've tried turning it back on with and without the battery but it shows no signs of life. Any ideas as to which part of my laptop I fried? It's an HP DV1000. I've plugged it into my stereo many times before, with no problems. Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

| Functional Alcoholic | That sucks, could be any number of things. Laptops can be kinda hard to diagnose, but you can start with the power supply. Unfortunately on a laptop they aren't cheap to replace, they are all different, and there is no guarantee that's your real problem. Also more then likely you fried a component inside the laptop, and unlike desktops, in a laptop it's rather hard to replace components. More then likely it will cost you more to fix it, then it will be to replace it. You might look into claiming it on homeowners/renters insurance. Last edited by Hitman; June 28th, 2008 at 11:56. |

| Did you notice any burning electrical smells afterwards? Sniff around the ports on your laptop and see if you can smell anything. If you do experience an acrid burnt electrical smell, then most likely you fried something in the laptop itself. If you can identify the specific area where you the smell is coming from, that may offer a clue as to what component was fried. In my opinion, it almost sounds like you killed your laptop with ESD. |

| Wow, thanks for the quick responses guys. Hitman, are you talking about the power supply cord or the power supply on/in the computer? I know that my battery has a lot of charge left on it so that almost rules out the possibility that the cord itself is bad. One interesting thing I noticed is that when the laptop is plugged in to the wall, I hear a buzzing sound through my stereo speakers when I touch the 1/8 inch aux cord to the metal on the headphone jack. But when the laptop is not plugged in, and I do the same thing, I don't hear the buzzing sound. Garetjax, in response to your question, I can't smell anything burnt on the laptop itself. I have another question: Since I really liked my computer, if I were to get another one just like it, and swap the hard drive from my old one, would the new one load up just like my old one? |

In any event, what you need to do is access HP's support website, enter the serial number of your notebook into the system and jot down the exact components that are in your laptop. Then, bounce those specifications against the DV1000 systems that HP is currently offering. Here's a couple links to help you out: LINK 1 LINK 2 Last edited by garetjax; June 28th, 2008 at 17:36. | |
