Default My experiment with "Standby"

I don't know if this should go here or not...

I've never used the "Standby" mode that Micro$oft so kindly built into their OS, so my wife and I each tried it. Her computer went into standby just fine (I think), and then with a flick of a key on her KB, she was good to go again. When I did it, my machine acted like it shut down altogether, except that the power LED was flashing. No mouse click, no button on the KB would take me back to windows, like I thought would happen. I had to hit my power button again, and then I'm back in Windows.

I happened to click Everest back up and my cpu is at like 44°C - like it's on a full stress load - and it's not doing anything! When it went into standby, all my fans went off, but I guess the system was still technically "on", and the poor cpu has no cooling! I only left it "off" for a few minutes, but man, did it freak me out to see that! A reboot took care of it, and the cpu was back at normal idle temps. My wife's fan remained on, but all mine were off. I went into BIOS and turned on the boot by mouse and keyboard thingys, but I don't think I like "Standby".

If it's not fixed, then don't broke it!

You got confused. On your computer you did Hibernate, on hers Standby. Both are very different. I kinda like Hibernate, but it's useless for me since my computer is always running.

Hibernate->System looks like its shut down, but power is still going thru your motherboard. No fans spin. You're back into Windows the way you left it. Uses some of the hard drive for caching. Useful to "bypass" the BIOS and still use much less power than just Standby. Bring back your work by pressing power.

Standby->System is powered on, fans spin. Shaking the mouse
or pressing the keyboard brings you back into Windows.
Things are like when you left them.

What you describe about Hibernate makes sense, since that's what happened to mine. But I hit Start>Turn off computer>Standby...and it goes into Hibernate mode? We did the same thing on two computers, and got two different results. How did THAT happen? :hmmmm:

And how is it good to have power going through the board, cpu and all with fans on hiatus?

I assumed the cpu was getting power when it looked like it was getting hot because the fan was off.

my hibernate thing saves the contents of my RAM and shuts down completely (quicker than standard shutdown) so I can switch it off by the plug on the wall. When I turn it back on it quickly restores the contents of my ram and shows the logon screen I click my username and all the programs I was using are still there.

Yep, that's what it does. Saves everything going on to the disk and bring it back up when you press the power button.

As for the CPU heat thing, i'm pretty sure this is not a problem. The fact you saw 44c was probably the temp it got to while loading everything and the fan starting to spin. I'm almost sure too that if you let it for more than just a few minutes the temps would be lower. ;)

Edit: Oh I see what you mean Death Blooms. By power in the mobo, I meant it as "there's juice available for the mobo" not as "something is active". Just like when you plug your computer to the wall and the switch on the PSU is to on. Bad choice of words.

I've never had good luck with Hibernate. It always seems to run much slower and less reliably than before whenever I come back out of hibernation.

mine hibernates almost instantly now I tryed this also helps bootup time (for some)
1. Start > Run
2. Type regedit and hit enter
3. Find key HKEY_LOCAL_MECHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\ContentIndex
3. Find the key "startup Delay"
4. Double click it
5. Under base check decimal
6. the value should be 4800000
7. change it to 40000
8. Restart & enjoy
