Default Mobodrivers

I need help here guys. Last week when Microsoft came out with their 127 updates, I downloaded the whole package without realizing what "VIA - Storage - Primary IDE Channel" was or what effect it would have on my ATI/ULI motherboard.

After several unsuccessful attempts to repair the OS, I finally had to reinstall Windows but now I'm left with all sorts of missing drivers: video, ethernet controller, mass storage controller, unknown devices, audio, and who knows what else.

I assume that these are all on the disk for my mobo, but have no idea of how to go about recovering and installing them. (It doesn't matter if I lose the data on drive C since that's nothing but Windows, but I sure don't want to lose anything on my storage drive.) Any help you can give is greatly appreciated!

Thanks, Carl

Thanks. Since I don't have internet access on my desktop and no floppy drive on my laptop, I'd like to try to use the disks that came with the mobo. Just don't know how to do it safely.

oh, lol. Just pop it in and when prompted, install the LAN drivers, reboot and you should have net access. Then download the appropriate drivers in my last post.

Yeah, most likely the mobo disk will lead you right through the setup, probably with some restarts.

If for some reason the disk doesnt auto-play then I would go to My Computer and find the disk drive with the Mobo disk in it, right click the disk (drive) and click Explore. Then I would try to find a Setup file of some kind, hopefully then the setup will start.

Installing the drivers one-at-a-time without internet access it a little more complicated... You can go to the device manager (right-click My Computer, click properties, click the hardware tab, then click the Device Manager button), right click each piece of hardware that is not installed yet (or not installed properly) and click 'update driver' then the Hardware Update Wizard should start. Click 'No not at this time' and Next then 'install from a specific location' (click next), then check the 'search removable media' box. If you know the specific piece of hardware you are trying to update , you can also check the box to 'include this location in the search' and you 'browse' your motherboard CD to find the appropriate drivers (or the folder in which you put the drivers that you download). If you only want to try one specific driver then uncheck the 'search removable media' checkbox and only select the driver you want by browsing. Then click Next and hopefully it will finalize the driver update.

I'm not trying to insult your intelligence here, as you may have already known all that... But I tried to be detailed for any newcomers that may have never done this before. Their troubleshooting search may lead right to this thread.

I just went ahead and downloaded all the drivers off the installation disk. Works fine now. Just have to spend hours installing updates, programs, and settings. I'm starting to hate Microsoft.

Thanks guys; and no, I'm not insulted, PrOLifIC. After all, it was my stupidity that got me ito this fix in the first place!

its not stupidity as even the most seasoned techs have had problems with VIA-related hardware and software including myself.
I tend to only get drivers from the manufacturer, not MS after I have had similar problems in the past not only with VIA but other drivers received from MS Update

Thanks HL and Corsair!
