Default Internet speed problem

I have 3 computer sharing the same connection

1 desktop with the modem
and 2 laptops on wi-fi

One is a Dell Inspiron 1420 and the other one is a HP Pavilion dv9000

The desktop is running XP Home and both laptops are running XP Pro the thing is the desktop and the Dell laptop are freaking slow when I use the internet The HP is lightning fast I know it's not a connection problem but rather a setting or a piec of hardware that slows doen my connection. How can I troubleshoot this?

First off, powercycle your router and modem, just leave them both unplugged for about a minute, then plug it all back in, and restart the computers. See if that helps.

Otherwise, I'd make sure to do a spyware/antivirus scan on those comptuers that are slow, make sure you don't have any torrent/file sharing programs running, and finally, i'd check in the router to see if QoS is turned on for that one computer that's working good... it could be prioritizing that computer over the rest.

Finally, i'd look at the firewalls at the slow computers.

Another thing, delete your browser's temporary files and whatnot, or try a diff. browser, like firefox or Opera.

I actually have utorrent running on the both that are slow but I paused all torrents that's what I started with but same thing both still slow while the HP is lighting fast Could utorrent slowdown a connection even if there's no data transfer at all?

It still maintains a few open connections. Turn off uTorrent and see if it makes a difference. I would restart the PCs as well.

I have not found any fix in the past few years for this other than to try different torrent clients.
Then clearly you're doing something wrong as well. I run utorrent 24/7 capped at 20kB/s under my max upload. The network runs great including internet traffic, moving files between local machines. .

I still don't understand why 2 computers out of 3 get affected. I wish I could find why the HP laptop is not affected by that.

So you're saying to put a cap on the upload?

Everytime I pause all the torrents on the desktop everything goes fast but not if I set the speed to even 5kb/s. Torrents must be stopped otherwise it slows down the desktop and the Dell laptop but not the HP laptop that one doesn't seem to be affected by that att all. Why is that?

Probably too many open connections for your router to handle. You might try TCP Optimizer and see if that helps at all, I wouldn't expect much though. Torrents are great, but I have a separate PC dedicated just to torrents, because of this issue.

I do as well, the desktop is being used only for torrents but it seems to choke my whole network
