Heres a pretty easy way to get rid of a large amount of them.

Go and get the program "HijackThis". Download it and run the Scan with Log. Once its done head over to this site:
http://hjt.networktechs.com/

Paste your log into the box and run the auto analyzer. It will give you a good idea of what you can and should disable. Using Hijackthis you can easily disable them.

Yeah, it sounds like you have a lot of extra applications running that don't need to be. Is this number taken as soon as windows boots up on an idle desktop or when you are using a lot of programs?
I normally have like 25-30 processes running...
I think you need to run some spyware and antivirus scans and do some serious system management. Try Spybot Search & Destroy and AdAware for spyware removal. There are a lot of different antivirus programs, but I use AntiVir and it is free and seems to work well.
Another thing you can do is go to Start -> Run and type msconfig
from there you go to the "Startup" tab (the last tab) and this lists all of the programs, and applications that start when Windows loads. Uncheck everything that you know you can disable without your computer crashing or refusing to boot up. If you are unsure about something, do a file search for the file and see if that sheds more light on its purpose. If you are still unsure about it's use/purpose, then you are probably better off just leaving it on. Things related to your drivers and critical windows system files you want to leave checked on. Many other things (like office applications, quick time, AIM, windows messenger) you can safely turn off. Just take some time and run the scans, then do the msconfig tweaking and see what your situation looks like.

Doing what Blake said is great (I do it) but i still prefer using Hijackthis. It may seem a bit complicated but by using the auto analyzer, you can easily tell what is what and delete what you don't need.

When it comes to running spyware scans, the more the merrier! Run all three (spybot s&d, adaware, and hijackthis) and I'm sure you might even get more stuff!

Oh yea of course. I would run either Spybot or Adaware first then use hijack this to clean up. Each program scans differently and they both pickup different spyware, so using both, you can get a very thorough cleanup.

I'm not sure how many of you have heard of "Black Viper", but he is probably the most knowledgable Windows person I've ever known. His site disappeared a little over a year ago, but this guy has copied all of his work. I personally use it and found it to be a great help at reducing system bloat.
