Sounds like you just have a bunked up optical drive. Sometimes those things just go kaput and there is virtually no reason. Have you tried any other types/brands of media? Will it even read audio CD's? The only other thing I could possibly suggest would be to try the drive in another computer and see if you have the same problems. But my guess is that the drive has failed somehow to prevent it from reading CD's anymore.

I found that with a version of OEM Nero that I had with a LiteOn drive had the same problem. As soon as I updated to a newer OEM version (that came with my HP 740i Lightscribe drive) it worked flawless.
As this is a bit tougher given your case, I would suggest try a few other programs to see if they will burn for you such as DeepBurner, CDBurnerXP or Alcohol 120 (or the FREE 52% version).

If none of these work for you then it is either a bad drive (test this by placing in another PC) or bad media (test by burning a few test discs with a completely different burner).

Thanks HL and Corsair!

We've had problems here too like that with hubby's computer; ended up having to buy a new drive. Best I could figure was it wasn't compatable with something to do with XP sp2. It worked fine before sp2 or one of the updates after it. Same problem. DVD's were fine, but CD's couldn't be read. I never tried updating firmware on ours

Cooper please be careful of the language. I just edited your post, sorry, but got rid of the "bad language".
