Default Hewlet Packard problem...

A friend just phoned me and his computer is acting up on him.... I think its a Hewlet Packard or HP computer... anyways, this is what happend...

He purchased a new monitor(LCD), hooked it into the vga port in the back of the computer (onboard video im guessing since he said its connect near the top of the computer), ran the new monitor for about a week and had no problems..... he then dissconnected everything from the wall, installed a power bar to keep everyhting safe... plugged the computer back in and when he rebooted... the monitor defaulted to 800x600 (originally set at 1024x768), stayed like that for a few moments, then the monitors screen went blank.... the power is on, the lights and fans are active on the computer.... He also hooked the old monitor up and that was also showing a black, blank screen....

could somehting have popped on the motherboard inregards to the intergrated graphics??

sorry for the essay, but just trying to get all the details in....

thanks...

brad

boot into safe mode with networking, download the latest graphics drivers (usually Intel Extreme or something like that), remove the graphics drivers in the device manager then restart.. when it comes back up to the desktop it should reinstall them... also be sure he installed the monitor driver from the CD that came with the LCD.

Thanks HL and Corsair!

Does he have a USB or PS2 keyboard/mouse? Sometimes USB versions won't work when PS2 versions will, especially in Safe Mode (and especially for anything Win2000 or older).

sorry for the delay in responding..... had to pull a few 13 hours shifts at work, so the computers been neglected!!!

From what I understand the onboard graphics popped on the motherboard. He spent sometime on the phone with tech support from HP, went through all the scenerios and thats the result.....

thanks for the replies guys... sorry to seem in such a rush... I was trying to find an answer before he just tossed the computer out on the street....

again thanks for the replies...

Brad
