Default Gotta admit I'm stuck on this one.

See my sig for my computer stats. It's no slouch right? So you'd think opening up a folder with a few hundred megabytes of pictures would be a fairly quick process right?

Nope. Not for me it isn't.

This only happens in WinXP. Not in Vista. When I open a folder with more than 10 pics in it, it takes a long time to open. That length of time is in direct proportion to the amount of files I have in the folder.

I've tried setting everything to stock clocks and then overclocking the nuts off everything. My 2 Gigabytes of RAM passes memtest easily and my SATA 3 HDD's are brand new and pass the SMART testing in Speedfan. In HD Tach, all three drives do very well. I have two Seagates with perpendicular recording, a 250Gb and a 400Gb, and a Western Digital,250Gb drive. All of these drives are plenty fast enough. I've done everything in the BIOS I could think of to get rid of this problem. It's in any folder, no matter the settings. If I have Filmstrip enabled, it works the fastest. Probably because it only has to render a few thumbnail images at a time.

But this puter is friggin slow to load thumbnails in folders. The deeper the folders are, the longer it takes.

Is thumbnail caching enabled?

Using either setting, the results are the same.

When I open a folder with 30 pictures in it in Filmstrip mode, it takes about 15 seconds for the open window to become active. When I go to slide the lower slider down the line of pictures, it freezes for about 10-20 seconds and then will slide with a jerking motion. Some of the picture thumb nails will not be displayed properly. Others will take a few seconds to display. Move the slider further down the line and the same thing happens. Even after I've moved the slider so that all the thumbnails have been displayed, once I try to move it back towards the beginning of the filmstrip, I get the pauses of 10-20 seconds again. I'm just about to the point of reformatting, but the thing is, it does the same crap with a fresh install of WinXP Pro. My CPU will run to 50% utilization and ram remains at 23% most of the time.

Okay lets get a bit more strange then, how is your temp? Could you be overheating and the CPU throttling? Have you tried changing the size of the thumbnails? Have you checked the screen resolution and verified that it is in high color mode? Also try turning off the AV.

You say this is only in XP and not Vista?

My temps are excellent. I've got the Antec 900 now. But temps for me are always the first thing I check since I run overclocked all the time. And yes, I've put my clocks back to stock and the problem is still there.

I haven't tried changing the size of the thumbnails though. I'd imagine you'd recommend them be smaller than the stock Windows settings?

Thanks for the suggestions!

are there any temporary drives like thumb drive or external backup drives attached to the system? I had one system that would only do that when a specific thumb drive was plugged in.
also have you tried the registry cleaner in CCleaner?

Thanks HL and Corsair!

No to both of your questions. I'll try CCleaner next.

Is this a new problem?

It almost sounds like you have some program running in the background thats causing your system to slow down. Is this on a fresh install of XP or a stale one?
