Welcome Manisare!!!
what kind of fan and what size is it? where is it located in your case?
A couple of things to check right away..... Is the fan secured rightly? sometimes they can vibrate loose and cause strange noises. Have you cleaned the fan recently? Dust, pet hair and other things can build up on your fan and cause issues.....wipe the fan blades down with a clean rag, or at the very least blow it out with some compressed air. Lastly, check to make sure nothing is making contact with the moving blades...things like wires.
If you have tried all of these things, and the fan is still making a lot of noise, you may want to buy a high quality fan...like a Panaflo or an Accousti-fan

If you have some light motor oil, you can peel the sticker off the fan a put a little bit of oil on the bearings

If you decide to lube the bearings. DO NOT use penetrating oil( WD40, Liquid wrench).

3 in 1 oil is good
Sewing machine oil is good

I've found lubing the brgs to be a temperary fix tho.. The brg already has damage, so fan replacement is emenent.

What if a fan is not damaged at all. It is doing good and has been in use for a good year or so. Do you think that during hardware maintanence, a good oiling of the bearings will help the fan?

I Like Watercooling. D-Tek Fuzion, MCP655, MCR220

My biggest problem with my fans is dust build-up. I try to clean them as best I can, but it's usually with a finger tip or an air can. I have had wires get in the way a couple times, and during a pre-case mod test, I had some scotch tape getting in the way. Another thing I get since doing my panel window is the air flow in the rear of the case will make a whistling sound when the fans are on the lowest setting, but if I bump them up a notch, then it stops. :smt102

And Welcome Manisare!

If it's not fixed, then don't broke it!

Looks like a good idea to me. I prefer 3 in 1 oil for all those tasks (been doing it a few times on video cards that started making noise as a temp fix) and sometimes it can last only a week and other times up to a few months.

A great tip for cleaning the electrical components like fans and the like - during your normal cleaning routine is to see if you can get ahold of some "roller cleaner". I've found it in large office supply stores and Office Equipment centers.

Roller cleaner is used mostly in copiers, scanners, and the like - and it will remove the dust, dirt and grime without drying out the components, making them brittle, or removing any oil.

(it also is the best cleaner for removing thermal grease I've ever found as long as you then clean that up with alcohol).

I've fixed more than one noisy fan with 3 in 1 oil and some roller cleaner - and most all have lasted at least an additional 3 years after the initial noise problems occurred...

Cheers,
Tuathal

PS: I'm back :P
