Default Dual core observations

I guess tonight was the first time I have burned a DVD since I installed the new motherboard and cpu. I was rather surprised by a few things.

In the pre-dual core days when I had a 520J and an nforce4 board, it used to take 3.5 hours to burn a DVD if I had to re-render it for any reason. Usually the reason for that would be to try to squeeze it all on one DVD so I didn't have to use Dual Layer disks. It would take just about all of the CPU for that time period and render the machine unusable for the most part.

NOW tonight I started the burning process and it was re-rendering for the same reasons, and I noticed it was taking almost 100 % of both cores. That in itself surprised me after all the talk about single and multi-threaded apps. I didn't expect my Ulead Moviefactory to be a multi-threaded app. I noticed the machine was a little pokey while this was going on, so I changed the affinity on the burning to cpu 1 and set my WinTV program to Cpu 0. I watched the Cavs and the Celtics while it was re-rendering the dvd and burning it. It took a total of 1 hour and 10 minutes for a full 4.7gb dvd.

I'm pretty impressed by that. Actually it sure is a lot more satisfying that getting sub 30 second superpi times. LOL

So maybe since dual layer disks have been out a while now, I'll try them again and it will only take about 10 minutes to burn a DVD since it wont have to re-render them.

I know a lot of folks see the benefits in higher frame rates on their games, but this kind of stuff is what gets me going

Have to agree with you there. We bought another couple used movies from Blockbuster Friday night. The first thing I do, when I can that is, is DVD Shrink them and make my own copy. I then place that copy in the living room for kids and company to use while the original goes into my cabinet in my bedroom. Here lately though, Sony Movie disks have refused to be copied.

But since going C2D, my full time, from DVD into the drive to popping out the DVD copy has gone down by at least 30 minutes, if not more.

ok Jph, I have a quick question. I am not trying to get off subject, but just how do you re-render a rather large movie to fit on a single DVD?

I bought a copy of a used movie, like Quakindude, and I would like to burn it to DVD, but the dang thing is like 7.2gbs of movie!
I mean I suppose I can go out and buy a dual layer DVD, but regular dvd's are still cheaper per gb than dual layer.

Just wondering if I have to buy some kind of software or what? I have Nero, and I don't see anything in there that I can shrink the ISO.

Yeah, that's one of the big benefits of going dual-core. Experiences like this make it near impossible to back to a single-core rig.

Can't believe my Celtics blew a 25-pt lead!

The only way to make it fit without using a dual layer dvd is to lower the quality.
You usually cant notice the difference.

actually, I was discussing this very issue last night with WhiteEagle, and Quakindude.
There is a program that is called DVD Shrink that worked fantastic!! I was able to shrink the 6.2gb movie down to around 4.3gb. Plenty small enough to fit on a regular DVD

Was there a noticable change in the quality afterwards?

Not a bit!!!! It works flawless, and when you do a backup, you just back it up to a DVD, and it starts the burning software!!!

It is an awesome, awesome software.

http://www.dvdshrink.org/what.html

You will have to google the download, something about laws or some crap. Just click on the where tab and there is a google bar in there.

Check it out Jph, it is great!
