Default Crap Loads of Trouble

Hello everyone, it has been awhile!

Well everything on the computer has been going well, got a new motherboard a few months ago nforce 7050 EVGA board. And the new case still is great. And of course the Asus Eee is fantastic.

The problem i just got as of about an hour ago is my computer not fully loading.

I downloaded an antivirus program that is required to access the internet on the college network, and that went fine. So I decided I may as well update the pc since I now have the internet. Thats where I ran into trouble.

First updated the graphics, that went well. Then did a windows update . . . it should have only taken about a half hour, but i think it froze updating microsoft office. Then a little icon for the installing of updates appeared in my taskbar saying something about restarting, even though windows update hadnt finished . . . It was puzzling but i figured it was all part of the install.

So i restarted . . .

I started up fine but upon loading the windows WELCOME screen it really slowed down . . . Then it just loaded the background and stopped! It didnt load the icons or the taskbar or anything. All i can access is the taskmanager. I tried the new task and going to the my documents or my computer, but neither worked nothing is functioning. Even tried restarting thinking it was a fluke. It did the exact same thing.

Now i have a ton of files that i need saved. But i cant access the files to transfer them. Thoughts?

Is the antivirus Kaspersky by any chance?

What about Safe Mode? Can you boot into Safe Mode by tapping F8 during POST and windows loading?

No, the antivirus is called Sophos, its a terrible antivirus but its required to access the internet on the school network.

I ended the explorer.exe then ran explorer.exe and it starts up but anything that would be in the taskbar like trillian, rainlendar, or any small icon next to the clock doesnt load or show up when i click on it through the program list.

To clarify only certain programs seem to function at the moment, I can't load the system restore but i can do a defrag. Sometimes though it just freezes and the taskbar disappears and then i cant get the taskmanager to load at all.

Should I just re-install windows?

Maybe check the antivirus quarantine to see if it didn't remove stuff that could be needed for a reason or another. Then maybe uninstall it if there's nothing in the quarantine, just to see how that goes (if you can).

Before doing a reinstall, I would first try a restore. Try booting in safe mode by hitting (tapping) F8 during boot. Then if you get the start of Safe Mode I "think" it is choose No to get a restore. Choose a date before things got ugly and see if that works.

Well i have no idea what just happened, but for some reason the system restore program took 45 minutes to load and open. So did the restore and it looks like everything is fine for now. . .

but thanks to everyone!

Good deal. I have had similar happen. Like downloading and having one in the taskbar saying restart. Then maybe something gets corrupt. Poof! Problems.
