Default A couple of issues

Hey guys, I know it's been a while since I've been by, but I may have a couple of issues going on.

1. I don't know if it's a monitor issue, or a video card issue, or something else. Sometimes when Windows is getting started, I notice there are some distortions or light lines behind the cursor that stretch across the screen left to right, and this distortion moves with the cursor if I move it around. I had an app open during booting and saw the same type of thing in different parts of the window. All this seems to go away though, after everything is done loading and booting.

2. I was using AOL Safety and Security Center for a long time, but now AOL is offering some new AV/Spyware software from McAfee. I thought I'd give it a try. After downloading it, and trying the AV scanner - which was slow beyond belief - and noticing that it sucked big time, I uninstalled it. I did a system restore to try to get the AOL SSC back, but I guess the McAfee software did a number on the SSC, and it is no longer useable. But since I uninstalled the McAfee thing, my nVidia firewall doesn't work right. It lets in internet traffic even when it's in "Lockdown" mode. I'm thinking about reinstalling it, in case the firewall got corrupted by the McAfee.

Oh, and please no jokes about the AOL stuff - I know they suck...

If it's not fixed, then don't broke it!

There might have been some remnants of the McAfee thing... Try booting into Safe Mode and manually deleting the McAfee files (do a system search for them). I dunno if that'll work for ya, but that's how I got rid of a virus I got, and McAfee might be just like a virus...

A complete removal of all AOL, McAfee, and nVidia software parts would be a good idea, then just reinstall the nVidia firewall. As for your display issue, try reinstalling your video drivers. Maybe also try another monitor and see if you have the same problem.

I removed the video drivers, and the nvidia NAM, and then reinstalled both fresh. As for the little video issue, it's still there when the system is booting into the desktop. The only other monitor I could try is on my wife's system, but it's older than mine, and it has some minor issues as well. As for the firewall, it still isn't working right either. I don't think it really needs to be configured, because it didn't need to be the first time. It still lets the internet in, even in lockdown.

relating to security software, my suggestions:

Comodo Firewall (FREE and the best software firewall around)
Anti-virus: Avira or AVG (or both, I use them both at the same time without a problem)
Spyware and malware: Spyware Terminator, AdAware, a-squared and Spybot (I know I am missing one here)

Thanks HL and Corsair!
