Default Computers Screwed Up

ok so one of mine friends is having a slight problem with his computer - it seems to restart on its own about every ten to twenty minutes. This only was further aggrivated when hooked up in a network with 11 other computers. He thinks its eitehr the motherboard or this crappy hard drive he has - and no its not the one running the OS, just and extra one - also he has noticed that the HD clicks when its spins. So anyone know whats wrong?

Usually a certain amount of clicking from the HD is normal (and more noticable with the case door off). It could be a huge number of things. PSU and mobo would be my first suspects, as well as the GPU. The HD could be the culprit, but I see that as being less likely. How does it do with the HD removed? Does he have a known good PSU and GPU that he could temporarily swap out to troubleshoot?

Like drew said, the PSU could be the problem.

Tell us the hardware being used and PSU model and we will be able to help alot more!

This is a very interesting statement. Does that mean that it gets worse once hooked up to a LAN? If that is the case, then I would be running some kind of anti virus scan :!:

There have been many many network viruses that will reboot computers, just for the sake of loosing curent work being done.

One other item that it could be is the NIC card. That will also cause reboots if it is going bad. I have had systems that NIC cards as well as modems cause this problem and some times will cause a system to not even post.

How about this!!! I just had a customer come in this morning with a very similar problem

I opened up the side of his computer just to find some Capacitors starting to blow the tops!!!!

2 of them was bad, so I ran to the local Radio Shack grabed a couple of them pulled the old ones out installed 2 new ones and bam no more reboots!!!

So be sure to check that. If you don't know what a capacitor looks like, they are little round can looking do hickys. Kind of look like a little tiny pop can. They can be a little bit of a pain in the butt to change, but with a little practice and of course the proper tools, it isn't too bad.

It can bring a bad mobo back to life :D

Heck, maybe I should write a short article, with some pics, on replacing bad capacitors, as well as what they look like when they are bad.

I will do that :D

I have a Gigabyte GA7-VAXP mobo that has 3 bad capacitors, so I will start doing an article on that this weekend. I will dig the mobo out tonight, and run to radio shack to get some new capacitors tomorrow.

HOLY.......... Man, you can't even understand what the heck they are saying :!:

But dang it, that is what it was going to be about... Kind of wierd, they just did that article on the 25th of this month :?

Well it would be kind of stupid to do an article that is already posted on the net.

not really...for this site's purposes, I think it would be great to get it from the standpoint of one of our own, you know? Actually, I'm very interested in seeing what you have to say about this, because I know I have a POS E-Machine sitting in the corner of my bedroom with a bad mobo, and I just don't know what to test on it to determine what exactly went wrong (I know it's the mobo because I had a socket A mobo laying around, tried it in the machine, and it worked fine, but it wasn't my board........dammmit, lol)......I'd say go and write the article :D
