| The computer I built for my mother is turning itself on a while after shutdown. I had the computer at my place for testing and tweaking, and never had this issue, but now it is hooked up at my mother's place for her to use, and it now turns itself on. This has happened two or three times. Everything is plugged into an old basic power strip (not one made with computers in mind). I googled this issue and found stuff about checking the BIOS power mgmt settings, which may be an issue even though I thought the BIOS was good to go. What could be causing this, and what should I check for? Has anyone ever had this problem? Specs: Win XP Pro SP2 Celeron 2.13ghz 512MB RAM ASUS P4-GX 40GB HDD 400W PSU If it's not fixed, then don't broke it! Last edited by Gig-O-Ram; December 31st, 2006 at 14:18. |

| I'm Evil | theres a setting in the BIOS, should be under the Poer or system Health menu, where you can tell the system what to do after a shut down, i always set mine to stay powered off INTEL QX9650 ASUS P5E3 Premium 4GB DDR3-1600 Sapphire HD 3870X2 Danger Den Tower-26 (Custom W/C) 5 x Seagate 250GB HDD in RAID5 BFG ES 800W PSU |

But I guess I may have missed something when checking the BIOS settings the first time around. I guess I'll be making another trip to her place to check it out. Ah, but not today, because she's coming here to celebrate New Years eve, so it'll have to wait. In the mean time, I told her to shut off her power strip. If it's not fixed, then don't broke it! | |

Could also be that the mouse or keyboard is set to wake the computer. One person's modem was turning the computer on IIRC. Are you sure she's shutting it down and not putting it into hybernation? Do you have specs? | I'm Diggin it! | In the Bios, look for a Wake on LAN setting. This has caused this "problem" for a lot of my buddies when they try overclocking for the first time and they change a bunch of crap. Or like Blondie said, Wake on Mouse or Keyboard could be enabled. Look under the Power Management Setup area of the Bios. | Well, I went to her place and checked her system, and I found one setting that was labeled "wake on PCI card" or something like that and disabled it, and now the problem is apparently solved. I have a modem card in one of the PCI slots, and I think she may have been getting errant signals or something through her phone line, causing the system to power up. She still has dial up, and I've been trying to convince her to go broadband, so web pages and any online actions don't take minutes to load, but who knows if she will? As far as specs, please check my first post. If it's not fixed, then don't broke it! |
