I would uninstall your motherboard's chipset drivers and reinstall them.

Do you have more than one USB port and if so, does it happen no matter which one you put the cable in?

34 USB ports? Do you have a hub, or over multiple computers. If more then one computer crashes because of this, I'd say faulty camera or cable.

I have a similar problem with one particular flash drive, a 1G Cruizer. It works fine on any of my other computers, but won't work on my main rig....locks it up until I pull it back out. Well, I haven't tried it since, it may work now that I've done a clean install.

It wasn't my flash drive, so I didn't experiment with it much. I put it in one of my other computers, and accessed it on my main rig thru my network.

I didn't think to reinstall the mobo drivers. Though, some time later, for another problem, I had to update the Windows USB drivers...which may not be a bad idea for you to try. Put your XP disk in, and update the USB drivers from your device manager.
