Default COD4 Crash

This only happens when I paly multiplayer, the single player works fine.
When I change the res or the refreash rate of my screen, the games closes down and about 20 seconds later I get the message;
"DirectX encountered an unrecoverable error. Check readme for possible solutions"
The worst part when you boot COD4 up next time it gives you the option to run in safe made, which I did. Now this was a mistake as its now stuck in 640x480 and its REALLY not nice.

Anyone ever had this or got a fix?

Sorry, I just worked it out. It only has that problem when I boot it through Steam, which has many problems of its own. I find myself having to go into the task manager and manually stop the Steam process every time I want to use it, and im sick of it. Sorry for the thead waste

I love steam, but it seems that they are having a few problems now with all the games they are now supporting. Had like 3 steam updates in the past two weeks

I got that error... once. Never happened again. I looked at it and was like WTF because one of my friends who just bought a 9800GTX got that error.

I just hit OK and tried opening it again... it's worked fine since.

I try to stay away from Steam as much as possible, only have it open when I play CS:S. Otherwise for COD4 I just use the shortcut directly to the game itself.

Thanks HL and Corsair!

I would, but alot of my friends only use steam so communication in-game isnt possible any other way.

try to get them to use Xfire
it works across all games (in game) and no need to keep steam open when playing other non-steam games

I'd love too but it ain't going to happen. I'm in a CSS commuity with about 30 members and all my friends only really play Counter strike or day of defeat
