| This may seem super simple, but I just got a used Canon EOS 20D and it isn't being recognized but Windows Vista Ultimate 32 bit. I downloaded the drivers of Canon's website, and when I plug it in it does the "de-do" sound like when a flash dive is plugged in, but it's not showing up under "My Computer" and nothing pops up on the screen. I've heard that you must have a special Canon utility to upload photos to your computer (the "EOS Utility" if I'm not mistaken) but Canon does not have it for download on their website (they only have the updater) and I did not get a utility disc with the camera when I bought it because it was used. What do I do? I do not have a card reader on my machine. Thanks in advance. | HL's Technomancer | I had this problem last night with a MP3 Player, basically I had to set the device to MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) and then install Windows Media Player 11 for it to show the device and the files. Since your running Vista, you should have the required WMP 10 that most new devices that run in MTP need. Any USB options at all? Being able to set it up into MSC as a mass storage device would help right now. |

| Nothing pertaining to USB settings at all. Wait, I just got it... I had to turn the "communcation" setting from "normal" to "PTP". | Usually you have to set the camera to one of the other selectors ... not camera[Photos] ... but viewer ... then your PC should see it. | Congrats Yellow on the new camera, well new to you. I have and use an older EOS 10D. Looking at the Canon website I had the same problems you face. Most of their software is the updater versions. I have the original disk for the EOS 10D and looking at the web much of the 20D looks to be the same, including the Zoom Browser which is the main bread and butter. Especially if you shoot RAW image files. Zoom Browser ran flawlessy for me in XP. However, when I installed on my Vista laptop Vista did throw a warning. I installed it and before using it ran the updater file. That got it working just fine in Vista. If you want a copy of the EOS 10D disk just PM me. You may be able to get the original 20D disk from Canon. I generally use a card reader for file transfer, it goes quicker. I still use Zoom Browser to convert my RAW image files as my photo software doesn't support RAW. I like and use both a Macro lens and a auto stab zoom lens besides the original lens I got with it. ![]() Ron |
