Default BSoD WinMe

My sister's computer has been encountering the following stop error message:

Important Specs:

1.3Ghz P4
128MB dual channel RDRAM
Windows Millenium Edition
(I'm not sure about the PSU, but it may be a factor)

It's gotten to the point that the PC can't boot in normal mode anymore. It may be the PSU, though I originally thought it was the RAM. I ran memtest86 on it overnight and it didn't find any errors.

Do any of you know what causes this message?

I think the WinME is your problem
But seriously, you sure there isn't a virus of some kind?

Nope.. it couldn't be a virus because I've re-installed Windows numerous times and I've tried linux.

Did it usually happen while doing the same thing or at a consistant point in time? Maybe the hard drive has some bad clusters on it, try running a scan disk to check for HDD errors.

Known video issues in Age of Empires II:

Nvidia GeForce
After you accept the End User License agreement (EULA) on a Microsoft Windows Millennium-based computer, you may receive the following error message on a blue screen:

File Name: VDD(03) + 00001816 Error: 00 : 0028 : C0231D9E

This issue may occur if you are using outdated drivers. To resolve this issue, download and install the latest video card drivers. To do this, visit the following Nvidia Web site:

http://www.nvidia.com

If this issue continues to occur after you have the latest drivers installed, try the 56.64 driver. To install the 56.54 driver, visit the following Nvidia Web site:

http://www.nvidia.com/object/win9x_archive.html

The is off by one number (00001816 instead of 00001815), but the rest matches. In any event, on a quick Google search, it appears to be a WinME + GPU issue. I'd try snagging the 56.64 drivers suggested above and see if that does the trick. Should be able to track them down on Guru3D.com.

hmm... I'd probably have to re-install Windows again to do it :( I've been installing the GFX drivers from the CD each time. She doesn't play any 3D games on her PC though. I'll run chkdsk /f in safe mode before I re-install Windows.
