Default Blue Screen error: Win32k.sys

I've gotten this error twice in the last two weeks and I can't figure out whats going wrong.

Since it points to a windows file I am suspecting my windows installation is starting to go. I've had it for somewhere between a year or two.

Opinions?

You need to contact your system administrator or technical support group for further assistance

Na I am not sure, but it looks like it is something in the sys32 folder.

I've seen this caused by two things

Faulty RAM

Bad windows installation

You'd better hope its the later :O

Well my ram is running at stock volts and stock frequency but it is old. I'll run memtest86+ overnight and see what happens.

I think I've gotten that error with an unstable overclock. But I've also seen it when Windows encountered some error (probably due to a corrupted install disk) while it was trying to install with all hardware at stock...

I just recently RMA'd a faulty WD hard drive that was frequently blue screening, and most of the time it was pointing to Win32k.sys. After reformatting/reinstalling Windows, the same error would occur, along with other quirky HDD behavior.

I suggest getting one of these. Even though it won't fix it, you will feel better. I would reinstall windows, see if you still get the error, then RMA the HD.

Have you used or looked at the event viewer logs? They may tell you a great deal more about the error. Right click My Computer and choose Manage. In the left pane expand the event viewer and look at System and Application errors that are logged. Hilight the errors with a red x to learn more about them. Does it blue screen at random or only when running certain applications/programs?

Next, lookie here to learn more about the error codes:

Troubleshooting Windows STOP Messages

All of those numbers actually mean something.
