Default Audio Problems

Hi i have been having problems with my pc's audio ever since i built it.
I am using an onboard soundcard on by gigabyte Pro SLI. The only audio that plays correctly on my computer is anything opened in windows media player or msn alert sounds. My standard windows alert sounds don't play. Flash videos on the internet also dont play the sound but i have recently discovered that they are actualy playing extreemly quietly. (once i turned my speakers on full). I have checked all volume settings and everything is on full. One other thing that dose play sounds correctly are some media players such as VLC and J. River media center. Others such as media monkey do not.

Anyone help?

Not an expert but try uninstalling your sound drivers at Hardware in Device Manager. Then reinstall and then see what happens.

Post the model number. You mention Pro-SLI - is it this one? GA-K8N Pro-SLI

Check the Download center - you may be missing a driver pack. I had issues on one mobo, I needed to get the chipset driver from here

Make sure you have the jumpers set correctly on the mobo if you're using the rear sound. If you're using the front sound, you would have wired it. It's possible you put the wires in the wrong spot. So I would recheck that.

In the control panel, you should have a blue sound icon, make sure that is set correctly. IIRC, it says Realtec. I don't have sound installed on this machine so I can't check.

Try going to Joecartoon.com and clicking on one of the cartoons, does that play correctly? With all of the Gigabyte's we own here (5+) I've had to go to Joecartoon to get the sound working. My guess is it has a plug in that's needed.

First thing I am going to suggest is what everyone suggests as the cure all. Go to Gigabytes website and download the most current drivers and install them. I did some searching around and a lot of people are having the same issue with the driver that came on the driver CD. Make sure and completely uninstall your current drivers first.

Also if you have Audio Connectors on the front of your case that plug directly into the Motherboard, make sure they are plunged in correctly. If they are not it could cause weird sound problems. Your getting some sound so I don't think this is the issue, but worth a quick check.

IIRC, there should be 2 blue jumpers on the sound. Make sure they are plugged into the correct pins.

Since you've had issues, you're best bet may be to email Gigabyte support. They can help you quicker then posting to any forum. I can't say enough good about their techs.

Right click on "My Computer", and select "Properties", click on the "Hardware" tab, then device manager. there should be a list of all the hardware there......are there any yellow "?"? If so that means there are devices with no drivers installed for them. If there aren't any, the drivers are installed.

Next, in the control panel, make sure the volume is turned up. there is a slider that controls the overall system volume. Move that all the way to the right. Then click on "Advanced" to make sure the volumes here are not muted or turned too far down.
Lastly, in the "Sounds & Audio Devices" folder, clock on the "Sounds" tab and make sure "Windows Default" is selected.

You probably have, but have you checked in your audio properties
Start->Settings->Control Panel->Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices->Adjust System Volume->[Device Volume] Advanced
and make sure all the volumes are turned all the way up?
