Default 4gigs ram installed, 2 gigs showing??

Running Windows Vista and XP.... Had 2 gigs of ram and I just installed another matching set... so I have 4 gigs total.... Neither Vista or XP is showing the second pair..... Is there somehting wrong?? All I did was unhook everything... install the same type of memory as what was in there and rehooked the computer up and powered up.......??

anyone have any sugestions?? I thought XP recognizes up to 4 gigs??? I figured Vista Ultimate 32 bit would for sure????

thanks...

Only XP and Vista 64-bit will recognize all 4GB. It is normal, your not doing anything wrong, But if you want to utilize all 4GB, you need to get a 64-bit OS.

OKay I thought so. I only picked it up because it was on sale after a rebate for 59 bucks.... So just to be clear.... the memory is sitting there doing nothing??? Or is it working but it just doesn't show up? Sorry.... but I just wanna be aware... :)

I'm not sure... I think the system uses the extra RAM in the background, but I can't be sure... I'd like to know as well!

It's just sitting there, 32-bit OSes can not address more than 4GB (I think, may be 3.5GB) of memory, including caches and such. I think that it may also include vRAM, but I'm not sure about that

Somethings not right ... even with 32 bit OS you should be seeing 3-3.25GB

It really depends on his components. I've seen computers stopping at 2.5, some at 3. Frankly though I never saw one at 2...

with XP and 4 GB or RAM installed, my system saw about 3.2 GB which makes sense because of the 768 MB on my 8800.

his videocards take up 1.5 GB of memory so that puts him around 2.5 GB which brings up a good question - exactly how much is showing up? just 2 GB?

May want to get another hard drive and install a 64-bit linux to play around with and see how well 4GB does work.

Thanks HL and Corsair!
