Default Laptop parts needed please

My boss passed along an older laptop, a HP ze4540 (Celeron 2.4GHz, 15" screen, DVD player) but it was stripped of most the parts except a dead clicking hard drive. Luckily it does have the power cord and battery but the battery is completely dead since it say uncharged for over a year which is no big deal for me, I will just use the power cord all the time. I am checking with him to see if he has the memory and wireless card but as I know he has a few other laptops, it was probably sacrificed to the laptop gods.

Checking to see if anyone here has any old laptop parts they may have lying around.

Items needed please:
  • I believe I have memory lined up. [strike]SODIMM DDR-2100 (266MHz) 256MB or 512MB stick (or 2), this lappy has a max of 1GB (2x512) so even a single 256 or 512 is fine with me[/strike] since I will be using linux on it.
  • Hard drive, if it is laying around I will take anything available, it would be nice to get a 7200RPM drive... but hey beggers can't be choosers.. -Another idea I was having for the hard drive... get a IDE 2.5" to CompactFlash adapter and get a 4-16GB CF card and just boot from there.... it will be using linux and not really needing any storage space, and speed is not really a neccessity... if anyone has a 4-16GB CF card they are not using?? I am just trying to keep open my options...
  • Wireless card, MiniPCI wireless LAN card or wireless PCMCIA/Cardbus or USB wireless, at least "b" or "g"..... if no one has any I did find a few at geeks.com for $18.00 but am trying to keep this under the radar as far as money as the wife would kill me if I spent money on it
  • HP laptop keys, 2 have popped off, letters "H" and the apostrophe/quotes button ( " ' )... They should work as is but ya never know what kind of parts people may have laying around so it is worth asking.
Any help is appreciated here.

question.... does laptop memory have the auto speed chips on them like desktop memory does? Such as can I use DDR-3200 where DDR-2100 is called for??? If I am not able to find any extras around and need to buy some (the wife will kill me if she finds out I need to spend money)... I want to make sure whatever I get is compatible...

Thanks HL and Corsair!

Memory should be no prob, i think i got some DDR ram lying around, not sure what the speed is, could be PC-3200, but i know my old ZD7k had no issues downclocking itself down to 2700. Let me go scrounge our guest room/office room when i get off work. If you still need the memory that is =)

Also do have i think a 40gb 5400RPM 2.5 IDE drive from samsung i think, again will check and get back to you.

got the memory from stinger!! thankyouthankyouthankyou
azianai checked for me for a few days and was not able to find the laptop hard drive so I am still needing one. Thanks for checking az!!

I have been thinking of going with something like this:

Seagate ST1 5GB CompactFlash Type II Card Seagate ST650211CF (ST1)

Its a 5GB CompactFlash 3600RPM 2MB cache drive... its a hard drive that uses the CF connection... but the whole reason of using a CF would be for flash, so any bumps this system takes would not ruin the hard drive.... although I would prefer more storage space so if I chose to dual boot.

Looking at geeks.com for some deals since they have some on sale...
The prices on these are crazy, for the same price, we can get almost 200GB of a desktop drive. Half these drives are refurbished....
If I can convince the wife to let me spend a few dollars, I am looking at this one since its on sale and NEW not refurbished:

Seagate ST980210A 80GB UDMA/100 5400RPM 2MB 2.5" NB HDD Seagate 9CV012-501 ST980210A

As for the wireless card, I will likely be getting me one of THESE.

Thanks HL and Corsair!

Yep that is the biggest problem with Geeks.com!!! Most of there stuff is redone

Now here is a deal for ya Screwballl, it is a 200gb drive, that is factory recirtified

Seagate ST3200820A 200GB UDMA/100 7200RPM 8MB IDE HDD Seagate ST3200820A

What that means, is someone claimed it was bad, but upon sending it back the factory fully tested it, and found nothing to be wrong
