One of my favorite tweaks is the MenuShowDelay.
Start > Run > regedit > Enter > HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Control Panel > Desktop > double click MenuShowDelay from right side and change the value to something lower to reduce the delay (make faster) when your mouse goes over the menus under the start button. I like mine at 50, feels much more snappy.

Got a scratch on something painted? Use a Sharpie to cover that little bugger.

When you're in need of a partition manager, look no further than the GParted LiveCD (the Gnome Partition Editor). It is a Linux distribution, but it is not merely for Linux users only. The latest version fully supports NTFS and does not require pre-defragmentation. It can resize, move, create, fix, and otherwise edit nearly every file system ever created.

A sister project for KDE known as KParted also exists. Both versions are superior, free, open-source alternatives to Partition Magic. (Take that, Symmantic! ) Just goes to show you that the best things in life really are free (as in freedom) after all.

____

Qemu (pronounced quee-imm-ue) is a fast CPU emulator capable of running nearly any x86 and x86_64 operating system perfectly. Unlike the free competition from Microsoft, it supports 24bit colors, which is what most Linux distributions use by default. The Windows version is currently still a beta, but it runs very stably. (The Linux and Mac versions are full releases.)

____

VideoLan has been a popular media player for quite some time (mostly on the Linux platform, but most of you probably use it in Windows on occasion), but most people don't realize that it is an excellent audio and video conversion tool / ripper. Try it yourself! Just click File > Wizard from within VLC's main window.

CCCP - Combined Community Codec Pack
A very useful and pratical DirectShow filter package (codec) which includes 2 players (Media Player Classic, my favorite and Zoom Player)
This pack makes playing almost any video you find on the internet a rather easy task, wherea in the past you had to download codec left and right, wondering whether or not they were malware free.

The CCCP attempts to be as unintrusive on your system as possible.

Real Alternative 5.1
Installs Real Player codecs and Media Player Classic. Only needed codec I didn't find included with the CCCP project. I suggest you install CCCP then Real Alternative and uncheck Media Player Classic, to avoid problematic file associations that could occur if you have 2 versions of Media Player Classic installed.

If there is a final hour, let's hope for a higher power. One by one, and two by two, I have ammo, what about you?

Ctrl C (copy) and Ctrl V (paste) I use those two all the time. You would be surprised how many people who have used computers for years don't know about those shortcuts, even though they are printed on a lot of keyboards these days.

Here is the Official M$ Keyboard Shortcut list.

Another one that some don't know about is dragging files with the right mouse button, which gives you a pop-up with Copy Here, Move Here, Create Shortcut Here options.

Speaking of copy, cut, and pasting, I'm completely infatuated with Clipboard Recorder from LW-Works. It keeps track of up to 99 copy/cuts before overwriting, and can still be accessed after a system reboot too.
